  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My daily tasks currently include reviewing and updating the maintenance logs for some of our machinery. Included in this i am currently writing work instructions based on viewing the machinery being used and asking operators. This will help in the future for when new staff are being trained up on how to operate the machinery.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As i have been doing a lot of maintenance logs and work instructions my skills on Microsoft Excel have improved dramatically as i haven't really used this program since school. I have also previously been working on the Assembly lanes where our product is fitted and put together. Working on this area of the factory i have increased my hand eye coordination and tool skills. Some of the tools i was using on the assembly lanes i had never heard of before but now i think i could comfortably use all the tools located in the assembly lanes.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am really enjoying my program at work and at college. The work at college is starting to tie in nicely with the stuff i am learning and experiencing at work which is great. Everyone is supportive and i have a good working relationship with my bosses and mentors.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Schneider Electric?
  • I do feel very valued by Schneider. I have had very good feedback from college and work after my 6 month probation period and get along well with all my bosses. I also feel valued as part of a team as i am often left with tasks to complete as a individual which to me says that they trust me to be a functioning part of a team getting the work done correctly and on time.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program has been a bit delayed at college for factors that couldn't have been predicted but besides that i am on track according to the schedule on my training plan. I recently moved departments away from the assembly lanes and am enjoying learning new things and working at a different area of the factory.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Our training provider does a very good job of making sure we are able to get in contact at and time and in any place. We have Google Classroom accounts which we can access from any laptop, phone or computer and i regularly message teachers and trainers on that platform regarding college and work issues.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Schneider are very well organized and the support i get from my bosses and mentor is very good. They always have time to talk regarding any issues personal or work related. We often have sit down chats regarding the progress of my apprenticeship and they are in constant communication with my training provider getting updates on how i am getting on.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As a 20 year old first year apprentice when i first started working on an apprentice wage it was a shock to the system because prior to starting the apprenticeship i was working full time in another factory on a very competitive hourly rate. However having got used to the regular monthly salary i am now more responsible with how i spend my money and how much i am saving in a help to buy ISA. Of course i would like to be paid more but i understand that a higher salary will come with experience.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • We did a stall at the Engineering week at Scarborough Spa which was in work hours but we were promoting Schneider and electrical engineering to the children in schools around Scarborough. In addition there are often flyers and lists around work which you are open to put your name down on if you want to go on social nights with other colleagues E.g Christmas night out, Football games, Concerts.

  • 9. Would you recommend Schneider Electric to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a worldwide company with great opportunities to fulfill my potential. I am also doing a higher apprenticeship so i am able to come out with a degree level qualification without the high debts that going to University would offer.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Schneider Electric?
  • Be confident and approachable in your interview, think logically on the assessment/group discussion days and make sure you know some background knowledge about the company and the potential site you could be working at.
