  • My job role will involve in maintaining assets on an HVDC converter site in Blyth, after the apprenticeship I will be a qualified craftsperson

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my handskills during this apprenticeship, taking a course revolving around it, I have also developed my ability to work at heights as well as my existing health and safety knowledge regarding working on site.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme, this is due to my work colleagues and trainers, all being very approachable and knowledgeable as well as the team I work in on site. The company has also been very helpful, especially in regards to the travel involved with my programme. They have also helped me in developing new skills such as learning to drive, giving up to £200 in order to take lessons.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by National Grid?
  • I feel extremely valued at national grid, mainly due to the courses we have went on, involving diversity and inclusion within the company as well as gaining appreciation from my business coordinator and trainers when work has been completed well.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured, giving me weeks where I am gaining qualifications and training and also weeks where I am on site gaining job specific experience. I have received a yearly timetable allowing me to stay up to date with any training and also allowing me to make plans in accordance with work.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive lots of support from my training provider, often being able to email them if I have any questions as well as them being very approachable when I am working,this means that if I have any problems, they are quickly resolved, helping me to progress with the work at hand.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer offers me lots of support, this includes expenses, meaning I am able to travel easily to and from work/site, as well as accommodation and food. the company also gives us mentors, as well as having a HR team that get back to us in very good time in order to answer any queries we have. My manager and business coordinator are also both very helpful and approachable, offering support whenever I need it and also guidance so that I am able to develop within the company.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary package more than meets my current costs, able to comfortably cover living, travel, daily and social costs, it also suits the location I live and work in, meaning I am not stretched or worried financially.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many opportunities outside of regular working hours, this includes gym facilities at our training site, football pitches, a golf course as well as many other leisure activities to keep me occupied on site, there is also plenty of opportunities to learn outside of normal hours, such as the E learning I am able to access on my company laptop, meaning I can continue to learn in my own time.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The company offers very thorough and extensive training, with trainers who will offer you support throughout your work as well as guidance for when you are finished, the company also has a priority on safety, meaning I always go to work feeling I am safe. My colleagues and team have also been very inclusive and respectful of me during my time on this programme.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
  • Be yourself, and follow any guidance or tips they give you during your application process as it is all relevant and helpful, also use the national grid website, as it has lots of excellent information regarding the company and the job roles and schemes available.
