  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Structural detail designer working on both main hull structure and CAT B seats. This involves 3D modelling on Foran CAD package which allows us to design the structural elements of the ship. Within the FHUll and FPipe environment we can utilise the tool to suit the job that has to be carried out. I attend meetings, reply to email queries and apply modelling techniques.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have massively developed communication skills as well as listening skills. Listening is very important to ensure that every detail is captured. Also, since starting my apprenticeship, my structural technical knowledge has really developed and I feel confident with the work I am completing.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme. Especially 4th year where I have been exposed to a lot more and given challenging jobs to help my development. I enjoy working with people and most of all working on naval ship design as this is my passion.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I feel valued within my team. I was given a lot of responsibility whilst working in the CAT B seats team. I assisted the team leader on a daily basis and he treated me like his equal, not as an apprentice. I believe this really brought me on as he had confidence in me.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured but not the best. I think time should be taken to thoroughly plan the route of an apprentice and not just stuck into placements. I believe we should be put into our final disciplines much sooner to allow more time to learn the job.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive a fair amount of support from my trainer. They are always on hand to assist if I need help or information. I understand they are busy and have many apprentices to look after but my training officer still drops by for a chat to see how im getting on.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary package is good. The salary was revised a few years ago. As a first year the wage was terrible and age dependant. Someone in my year who was 10 years older than me and had no more commitments than myself earner more than me. It wasn't fair. Now it is much better but we all want more money!

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There aren't a large amount of opportunities, I try to engage fellow employees by organising charity events such as charity football games to get apprentices, members of staff and managers together in a more relaxed environment to play football. I hope this helps team ethos.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BAE as they are a great business to work for and work on amazing products. I get a great deal of achievement and job satisfaction which makes me want to learn more. I am happy with my current job and see a future for myself in structural engineering.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • I would say to be yourself and do as much research on the business before you apply. Don't miss a detail off the application and work hard to do as much as you can to make yourself stand out from the crowd. The more time and effort you put into interview preparation, assessments and applications, the more chance you have of getting the job.
