  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a trainee software developer on my current project is to manage the transformation of ~700 documents using a bespoke program, Java code, and XSLT and XML transformations.

    7/10

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my knowledge of XSLT and XML, whilst my Java knowledge has remained fairly unchanged. I have learnt how the organisation manages projects and how the project team works and interacts with each other - a useful insight. I have received a Level 4 apprenticeship with CGI prior to embarking on the 2nd year of a 3 year degree apprenticeship.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I initially enjoyed it a lot. However, being in the same role for over two years loses it's enjoyment. On the off chance i manage to do something else, it is enjoyable. However, with my current role continuing to do the same thing is fairly unenjoyable to me.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by CGI?
  • The feedback and how i feel i am appreciated in the work i do provides good value.

    9/10

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There have been many things that have needed to be clarified and occasionally answers take an irritating amount of time to be provided. however, this is to be expected from a large organisation. Sometimes, it is felt that the training provider rather than CGI is not organised or structured (University of Winchester for example took weeks to answer questions regarding the third year dissertation/it portfolio).

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Very little from the level 4 apprenticeship. a little more from the degree apprenticeship.

    6/10

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots, concerns are always listened to.

    8/10

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • barely covers it.

    6/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are constant opportunities circulating in emails etc. however, with the sheer amount of work i have to complete outside of work hours means i cannot take advantage of any of them.

    8/10

  • 9. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They listen, and although things take time to change or process. concerns are legitimately listened to, and while the answer isn't always satisfactory, reasoning is given that allows for understanding of that decision.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • The experience is challenging, but provides you with valuable experience so don't be deterred. The people are always friendly and willing to help but you have to pursue your own career opportunities, no-one will do it for you. if you are motivated and focused, you will go far, but if you expect an easy ride this isn't for you.
