  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Engineering apprentice. Day to day duties include predictive maintenance and also observing the plant for failures. Liasing with operatives and speaking to managers regarding the plant. Trying to get involved with any projects that might be going ahead. Meeting contractors and working alongside those on certain jobs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. I will achieve my HNC at the end of the 4 years. I have attended a motor course. Hands on experience also. I have developed my interpersonal skills and feel more confident in taking meetings and speaking my mind as and when I need to. Training courses are available to a certain extent. I am developing my academic skills to a high level.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is what it is. I find it enjoyable at times but also very frustrating at times as I want to learn more, however I feel that there is limited opportunity to do this. There is a lack of staff, especially long serving staff that are able to pass on there knowledge of the plant and how things operate.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Nestle?
  • Not very.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The academic side is well structured. The technical side is not so well structured and I feel like it could be better. But due to the lack of personnel available to pass on there skills, the apprentices can struggle to learn as well as previous apprentices. Should there be more structure towards the apprentices then we may benefit from this a lot more.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Adequate.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Enough to get by. If I ever do have a problem they are always there for me to approach and discuss any issues. This is good that they can take time out of theyre bus day to do so, however the points put across are not always met with great responses. but it may just be that there hands are tied and my comments are not viable.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • It is what it is. The apprentices are really well paid in my opinion. there is a steady increase in pay throughout and a substantial one at that. I think that we are one of the better paid apprentices in the area and supporting areas. Location can be a problem for some as the cost of fuel ect is rather expensive and on an apprentice wage can be quite difficult. If you are a home owner this is quite difficult too.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Not really.

  • 9. Would you recommend Nestle to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall a really good place to work. The environment is clean and tidy. The work can be challenging but at the same time can be really good. Nestle is in a good area and can be easily accessed through local transport. The wages are fairly good for the area too.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Nestle?
  • I would advise other places of employment if you are wanting to be the best engineer because training at Nestle you wont become the best.
