  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Civil Engineer Apprentice. Within my apprenticeship we do blocks in Leeds at college where we do various different subjects to do with civil engineering, in this time we complete assignments. we also do site placements which day-to-day I do setting out tasks and also take levels. I get set tasks such as environmental checks on sites and I am involved in many of the site meetings.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I will come out of my apprenticeship as a qualified civil engineer but I have gained skills throughout writing my assignments, these also get marked to indicate your grades. I feel by taking on an apprenticeship it is ideal for civil engineering as you gain knowledge and experience.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy learning about civil engineering and writing up my assignments. I love meeting people on site and interacting as I am a people person. on site I feel I perform well carrying out my tasks and feel I am developing very well as an engineer as I am being more capable. the only part of my apprenticeship I do not enjoy is the travelling therefore I would say to others they must be prepared.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised as there is always someone to speak too. we had a very good induction on the first day of college which went through everything in detail and settled our minds to what will be ahead of us. We have plenty time to study as not only during college but also after.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The tutors within college are very supportive as if any information is confusing, they are happy to go over the information again with you. I feel we can get support and guidance if needed so but you must have the confidence to speak up.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • we are able to get in contact with our employer if we have any problems and they are very easy to get in touch with but again you must be confident to speak up if you have a problem. They also check in regularly to ensure you are doing well.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I feel having access to train tickets being paid is great and helps manage my salary. Currently I am living at home for my site placement and feel I save a lot of money and my salary works very well. while at college I feel I spend more therefore have to be more sensible with my money but it is manageable. I feel there should be a set apprenticeship wage for apprentices in the same year groups rather than for under 18 and over 18s.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • there are events on during working hours but I have not been to any events outside of work.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great apprenticeship due to the education and also the experience. it great getting an education and an income to live off.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • if you are applying, be confident. remember everyone is in the same position. make sure you know what your getting yourself in for as it does consist of a lot of travelling and I have realised while on site I am not as prepared as I thought about living away therefore you must be prepared.
