  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a junior project manager and also have responsibilities in the service delivery team. My role involves managing small projects on a programme with a large NHS trust. I have lots of client interaction and have to deal with senior directors in the client organisation right down to the end users. The main aim is to provide them with the best IT service possible and deal with any issues and requirements as quickly and as professionally as possible.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt how to adapt to a variety of situations and how to work in unusual environments such as hospitals, mental health wards and even prisons. I have had lots of exposure to the technical side of the programme allowing me to pick up new skills in technical areas such as telephony, networks and applications. In addition to this the opportunities i have been presented with to manage my own projects has allowed me to develop strong communication and have a chance to hone my management skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love the programme. I have made many good friends, both on my university course and in the workplace. It feels good to come to a job that i enjoy and where i learn and challenge myself on a daily basis. The project I am working on has given me the opportunity to work across over 100 sites around London and to experience working environments that most people don't get a chance to see. The company provides great support to its students and the course is well structured to allow them to get the most out of it and to be able to apply learning in the workplace.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by CGI?
  • I feel well valued by CGI. I received a very good performance review last October and was rewarded with an excellent salary increase. I also received an additional bonus as a result of my good performance which makes me feel well rewarded by CGI and that they value my contribution. It is always nice to be recognised and if there is a financial reward attached then that's even better. In addition to this the people on my project have made me feel very valued as they have given me the opportunity to go from a very low role on the project to now having a fair amount of responsibility. This makes me feel valued by my project which is great.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • On the whole the course is relatively well structured. I feel like the content of the course is good and links well with work. The student recruitment team offer a good induction into the programme and offer good support such as purchasing text books on our behalf and organising student reps. I would like to say that the University of Winchester don't seem to be very on top of the course. While our lecturers are good, the course leader can't even answer basic questions about the course structure and marking criteria etc. This doesn't fill us with confidence and has led to lots of confusion and wasted time in lectures having the same discussions with her.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The lecturers i have had thus far have all been more than happy to help and offer extra support. They seem to understand our situation and understand the challenges that come from studying alongside working. They are generally available over email and happy to answer questions outside of our usual uni hours.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received a tremendous amount of support from my employer. They provide various support systems that make it very easy to get support if we need it and also to have people to speak to about any kind of work, uni or personal issues. My mentor has become a very important person to me as he helps make sure i'm focussed and organised and am on top of things whilst offering me an ear if i need a chat or if i'm getting a bit stressed out.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary CGI offers is very competitive and the amount i'm currently earning is very good especially for a 19/20 year old. Having had to move away from home to Reading which is a particularly expensive area of the country, it doesn't stretch as far as I'd like. I am comfortable with it but have to skimp on a few luxuries. As someone from Yorkshire i would've liked the opportunity to work closer to home and live at home while saving some money for a deposit however CGI doesn't offer any Northern locations for the degree apprenticeship. Other benefits the company offers such as a shareplan and pension are very good and they cover all my commuting costs too and from London so on the whole i am very happy with this.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Plenty. CGI has a 'sports and social club' that offers discounted tickets to sporting events and other social events such as theatre, music and comedy. As a big sports fan i have also been happy with the amount of sporting activities that are available within the company. Particularly the CGI Euros, an annual football tournament where the European offices send teams to a location in Europe for a weekend of football.

  • 9. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a great employer and offer excellent support to its employees, particularly those going through the apprenticeship programmes. They offer good salary and benefits and provide a huge range of role opportunities in a wide spectrum of industries. This allows young employees to quickly gain lots of experience.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • The assessment centre is used to assess apprenticeship candidates. I would advise those attending one not to be afraid to speak to people, be confident, show that you are strong with people and ask lots of questions. They base their decision on who to take on more on their people skills and how they present themselves rather than technical skills or their CV.
