  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • General duties, assisting engineers on site offering help when necessary, developing an understanding, working with different job roles on a daily basis, conversing with different people. Different tasks to complete each day dependent on what work is needed to be done, e.g setting out, quality controls, monitoring, changing batteries on noise and vibration monitors. Attending regular meetings to ensure tasks are being done correctly and in a timely manner. Learning on the job, gaining more experience from the information that has been taught at college and being able to apply this within the job itself.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The skills that were taught at college such as setting out, quality control, materials and using the equipment helped as having an understanding of how they worked already meant that there was no need to be taught this again and quicker progression could be made in tasks. I have attended three different courses already during my time on site, sea survival course, VHF course and an environmental course all have helped with confidence building whilst on site. Site engineers have also had a large input in development, they have talked through and explained each task in enough detail to develop a true understanding of what is expected. During the short time spent on site I have developed and started to understand what is expected and needed to become a good engineer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work that I am doing on site is enjoyable, there is so much to do so therefore always busy and constantly learning, there is no pressure if I don't do something right the first time which makes me feel more relaxed and means I can enjoy the task I am completing. The team have been very welcoming and supportive, as well as highlighting company values and what is expected of us. • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised, the college blocks are precise and informative, the level 3 diploma that I have undertaken is a great way to ensure that I can have a clear understanding of what is expected of me on site and what I will continue to learn in the future, clear pathways are highlighted. The support from the company as a whole is well organised with as much contact as possible to ensure everyone is on target and happy in their job role. The studying during the programme doesnt just stop at college, I have been set tasks to complete which are continuing to further my learning. I have been given set jobs and tasks to complete whilst I am on site which gives some structure to my day to make sure I complete these.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • During college I received a lot of support from the people development team and the college tutors. The tutors at college were always happy to help and offer advise when asked, they made sure that we understood what we were learning and why it was necessary, for example health and safety was a key part of the learning and what was needed to keep us and others around us safe on site. There have never been any issues if I needed help from someone, everyone has always been happy to help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • There are no issues whatsoever with the salary we are being paid. There is access to a train-line account which means we can book trains whenever we need without them being authorised. We are paid a living away allowance and hotels are booked through the company. We had access to a free rail card, and we can also use expenses if necessary for any extra costs we incur which helps a lot.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • We have been taken for two different meals with the company since joining, one as a welcome meal and the other for Christmas, both were enjoyable. There are few opportunities so far that I have heard of however due to only being with the company for a short period of time I'm sure there will be events and opportunities which will arise.
