  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My Job Title is a Software Support Analyst - This role incldues: - Delivering small to medium change to the software deliver cycle. - Looking for ways to fix any issues or improvements decided by the business or internally. - Supporting any exiting code or writing new code to address issues that may arise. I interact with other Technical Analysts to help me develop during my apprenticeship as this is the final role i will be gaining at the end of the year. I also have to interact with a lot of Business Analysts, they interact with the business gaining their requirements on issues that they raise through POW streams. This is important as they can work out what the business is actually asking for. All of this goes towards making sure that the main business environment (ICE) is functioning as this is the integrated customer environment and where almost ever action from the business takes place regarding customers.

  • The apprenticeship has been fantastic for the development of my personal skills as there have been many opportunities to learn and go on extra training courses. I have learnt and developed on many skills throughout the year mainly focused on programming languages such as C#, HTML, CSS, PLSQL, Shell Scripting and also other concepts such as object orientation and procedural languages.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by E.ON?
  • I feel very valued due to the time invested in the apprenticeship program, they have put us on any extra courses that we needed and have payed for all expenses when we have been away on training. They have also given us the opportunities to become more involved within the business and the work that they do on a day to day basis, this makes me feel valued because it makes me feel useful and feel like an investment in the company. The offices could have done with more parking spaces (not really a massive thing but...)

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The only issues i had with this apprenticeship was with the actual apprenticeship provider QA, the marking of course work was a slow and painful process. However Eon did everything in their power to solve this issues and actions are being taken to fix these issues for the future. However apart from this process everything was very well organised and was easy to organised everything.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The training courses that we go on are fantastic and the trainers are really helpful, however the assessor was overloaded with work slowing down the process of getting work marked. This was fed back to QA and they have since hired a new assessor to be trained by the current one.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Eon could not have given any more support, we have meetings every week, one as a group and another as a one to one meeting to sort through any issues that we may have and if anyone has anything to raise. Our managers did absolutely everything in their power to make sure that we where learning and happy whilst doing so.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The starting wage was 14,000 a year and throughout the year as we passed more and more modules we progressed to 24,500 a year on a basic role within the company. This wage as being 18 and not having many responsibility was fantastic. I have to drive roughly an hour to work from where i live to the office, however this is an easy trip for me as its well located on the motorway.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • as i live quite away from the main city where the office was located i did not get involved with many work related things, however the opportunity was there, everyday coming home from work i drive by a large shopping center. And we would sometimes go out for drinks on the weekend with my colleges, also within teams (depending what team) there are many meals that you are invited to outside of work.
