  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work as part of the firm's tax practice. My day-to-day tasks can be vary but broadly this involves reading and interpreting tax legislation as a basis for providing advice to our clients via detailed memos or reports. I'm given a fair amount of responsibility in my role and I'm trusted to do a good job.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I'm training to qualify as a chartered accountant and I'm always learning new skills day to day. In particular, my writing and Microsoft Office skills have improved substantially since I've been at EY.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Very much - I find the work that I do to be interesting and the firm has a friendly and supportive culture which is reflected in my team and the people I work with.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • I feel that the work that I do is appreciated by my managers but at a leadership level I'm not sure how valuable I am to the firm as a school leaver. The work that I do is identical to what a graduate would do, only I get paid a fair amount less.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well organised and structured. College dates are planned well in advance, we are provided with a lot of internal training and I have mentor whose duties include supporting me in my career progression at EY.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • A good amount of support. I attend college throughout the year and I have been provided with extensive online resources for revision while at home. Tutors are also freely available to offer additional support either by phone or via email.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A good amount of support. All of my tuition and professional qualification fees are paid for by the firm, as well as supplementary material to help with revision. As a school leaver we are also given study leave to revise before an upcoming exam.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My current salary package is sufficient to meet my travel, daily and social costs. However, it would be stretched if I wanted to live away from home.

  • The firm offers a broad range of networking, social opportunities, and volunteer work.

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The firm has an inclusive culture and can offers very good career opportunities, both within the professional services sector or the wider financial services industry. Remuneration improves substantively post-professional qualification.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Be yourself during the application process and don't claim to have skills that aren't true. EY are looking for applicants with the potential to develop, not ready-made professionals. Be willing to grasp opportunities as and when they come up.
