  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Performance & Capacity Architect Providing SLA Reports to the customer, whilst utilising technical skills to monitor the Performance of the system. MY weekly work can change fairly quickly and sometimes it's difficult to keep on top of each job i am doing or have started however recently it's not been as stressful and hectic at work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Developed skills on Unix, AIX, DB2, SQL, Perl, Shell and PHP. I've also done some courses which were manditory at IBM such as health and safety training as well as some courses the business has provided. I have learnt more about the business as a whole and the infrastructure too. I think my communication and computer skills have also improved.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme to the extent that it challenges me and always gives me opportunities to improve both my technical skills and also building personal relationships. I think I'm growing more confident at work as well which makes the day easier to get through compared to when i first started. i know more people in the business so can chat to more people too now.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by IBM?
  • I feel valued in the fact that both my Managers appeciate the work effort I put into my daily role. This also comes from recognition via feedback from peers, and the act I am a Subject Matter Expert in one department, meaning people come to me for problems. This in turn makes me feel more valued. Overall i think it's quite a nice place to work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is fairly well structured and organised. The induction was helpful, and the corresponding courses allowed me to build upon my client skills and building relationships. If I were to have one query it would be that perhaps it could be more technically bias, however I am speaking from someone who comes from a technical background and will obviously be bias towards this.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive a little bit of support from my Training Provider. I would like to get a bit more feedback with previous work and assignments i have completed and have an overview of my progress as in this case i do not know how to improve myself in terms of college work and better myself without having feedback or group chats even just with one tutor etc.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive good support from my Employer as we typically have an informal chat now and then (usually in passing). if there has been a prolonged perios where we have not necessarily chatted as much then usually they will make time for me. they also ask me to email if i have any problems with my work or how i am treated as an employee too.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I feel that the salary is more than adequate for the current situation I find myself in. Although some of the skills I'm learning are perhaps more sought after and are therefore worth more, I completely understand the fact that I still have little experience. hopefully my salary can grow as i grow within the business and learning new skills.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • One of the key aspects of the IBM Apprenticeship programme is that there are many opportunities outside of work. In fact, they encourage us to take part in giving back to the community, and visiting local colleges, schools and different events to promote both IBM as a company and the apprenticeship scheme itself. We also get a chance to help out internally and are asked for help a couple times a month.

  • 9. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Because of the excellent training opportunistic, the support and guidance from Foundation, the vast amount of skills that you learn, and also the people who work there. It is a fantastic scheme, which comes with a great overall package. The support from the employer and supervisors is at a great standard and all-in-all it is a great place to work and get a placement at.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
  • To be calm and really show what you can give to IBM. It's not all about academical skills; people skills and being able to work with a variety of people is just as, if not more important. Ensure you are aware of all aspects of the apprenticeship or placement you are applying for and that you actually know about the business a fair amount too! this is always key!
