  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a research and development chemistry apprentice. My day-day roles involves formulate any batches that need making and produce stability reports for any samples we are storing. When necessary I will produce experiments and attend meetings about the current global projects we are completing.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. I have developed my chemistry knowledge by working alongside R&D scientists everyday. I have also furthered my education by attending Liverpool university to study chemistry. I have also learnt how to interact with people form a business sense.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my work greatly. Being able to be a part of a project that will be launched on UK shelves is extremely satisfying. Having a very supportive and easy to approach team also helps with any problems I may encounter.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Unilever?
  • I feel that I am as values by any other Unilever employee. My opinions are heard and ideas followed through. I believe I am as valued to the team as colleagues who have been at the company for 19+ years.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very organised. Within such a large company the hierarchical structure is well thought out and fits well to what we are trying to deliver. The university course is also well founded and robust.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive all the support I need to carry out my job. Training is extremely professional and is stressed as a key requirement to complete before carrying out any work.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive from my employer is continued and consistent throughout my programme so far. They have a can-do attitude and offer support both within the team and in high management positions.

  • My salary meets my living expenses appropriately.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes, many company events are held globally which can either be virtually or physically attended. There is an onsite gym and a well being calendar is circulated each month.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Unilever has opened up many opportunities for myself and has laid foundations for my future career. There is no doubt that they care and respect their apprentices with the utmost integrity and professionalism.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?
  • The interview and application process is hard but necessary. Be passionate. Be real. Be yourself. Understand Unilever brands and their business ethos.
