  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an Intern at EY i was surprised with just how much work that i got to do whilst i was there! I got to have meetings with clients, meetings with team leaders, even talk to partners! Daily walk to the client office in london was lovely too!

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I managed to find out that even though i though i was good at excel - there are many shortcuts i could learn. For example, keyboard shortcuts are a must!! I also learned a great deal of accounting knowledge which helped towards my degree. Also, ICAS qualifications are just around the corner so the knowledge will help there no doubt!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme, there are certainly some more challenging modules at university such as the finance ones or perhaps taxation, but it is all do-able in the grand scheme of things! The friends you meet will last a life time and the advantage that you get monetary wise is also a lovely perk, and the programme is run well in terms of the two placements.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by EY?
  • I feel really valued to be honest, they give a fair old bit of money to help with living costs and on placement everyone was very helpful when they could be, and gave very nice reviews. They have a cool constant reviewing system that allows you to see just how well you're doing and where you need to improve!

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Organisation is a bit of a downfall, but to be honest in an organisation with nearly 300,000 employees i really do understand why. Communication breakdowns do happen, but sometimes i wonder why they need to ask for my A level and proof of identity documents 500000 times over. However the structure (1 year uni, 1 summer placement, 1 year uni, 1 year placement, final year uni) is really well done.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I received a lot of support from my training provider - on the first day there was a large laptop introduction and that was nice in Canary Wharf, but the rest of the training is more on the job and common sensical - but this is no bad things given the team i was on and the people i was with.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I currently receive more support through the uni as any other student does in terms of conciliation and work problems - but financially EY pull through and do more than required. On placement there was more support that I could ever want - but you do have to ask for it and use your initiative!

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • The salary was just a basic london salary for an intern, maybe a bit better, and it covered my accomodation in Lambeth (Very central) and also covered my food and lunches out and all my travel (although I walked a fair bit) and I had a small bit left over! And obviously with the money given at uni its more than enough.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There were loads of opportunities - even a boat cruise organised departmentally! free bar and a cruise down the thames - also EY have loads of sports teams and pretty decent social groups going on. Also - its london! the place is filled with opportunity, however it may be difficult to find something that isn't very busY!

  • 9. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • EY have been really good to me since Ive been part of this degree scheme and the offices are stunning, the location is great, and I loved the culture there such as there are no offices everyone can just approach anyone - even the partners! Its just a friendly vibe there!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • I would tell people to be careful about picking reasons why they want to be an accountant, and make sure you brush up on your knowledge of the qualifications EY offer (i.e. ICAS). Also make sure that you know psychometric tests and you're willing to work fairly long hours and not moan!
