Apprentice mechanical technician Review

My role as a mechanical services engineer changes on a daily basis. We have to complete weekly electrical meter readings, daily chemical tests within the boiler house, daily checks in the boiler house, compressor checks, AD plant tests and checks, refrigeration daily checks, which includes cooling tower daily checks. Basically in charge of the running of the steam for the factory and it's processes. The supply of glycol and refrigeration of the factory and processes, the safe running of the AD plant and also any pipework and repairs of various valves and steam lines within the factory.

I have learnt many new skills. A lot of plumbing applications and using of tooling such as Stilson's, pipe bender, pipe threader, crimper and how to weld pipework. I have also learnt how to track steam lines, find faults on the lines and how to repair them safely. I have learnt various different types of pumps, valves, heat exchangers and actuators for processes. I have also learnt a lot about boilers, AD plants, refrigeration, cooling towers glycol supply and why they are so important to the factory and needed for the processes.

I find coming into work and learning a totally new field of engineering, extremely interesting. It was a huge learning curve and continues to be so. I am constantly learning and picking up new skills and I am thoroughly enjoying the challenge.

Overall I feel reasonably valued by Nestle.

The programme has been structured and laid out well overall.

I think the training provider however could provide more support or better ways of showing it.

I think I receive good support if needed by Nestle. There is always someone available to help if needed.

I have had a great apprenticeship so far and therefore would see no reason why I wouldn't recommend Nestle as a company to work for. Sometimes however the communication being passed over between the bosses and staff could be a bit smoother and efficient.

Always try to the best of your abilities and always give your all. If you do that then you should succeed at Nestle. The company can reward hard work and recognise this. So always strive to better yourself and be the best you can be.
