  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a software engineer apprentice and I am involved in working in a team while learning how to code in different coding languages to create databases, services and applications. I have worked on various projects and have has placements in different teams to really learn the different sides of my companies software development.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have acquired many new skills. I have earned a certificate in IT principles and also a Microsoft certificate for passing their assessment. I have taken Scrum courses and learnt the agile way of working which means my collaborative and skills to work in a team have vastly improved. My coding and programming skills in multiple languages have gone from virtually no knowledge and practice to a very respectable level in a short space of time so I am also very proud of that achievement.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my job and what I have learnt. My workplace suites my work style and it really makes me comfortable and encourage me to work to best of my ability. I enjoy the way I learn new things everyday and there is always an abundance of things to learn and do. It exceeded my expectations and I really enjoy going in to work everyday to the point it doesn't really feel like work.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Transport for London?
  • I feel very valued by Transport for London. My manager always understands my needs and always makes time to catch up with and offer guidance and support. I feel like I am small but also important member of my team and my points are always listened too and recognized. When I produce very good work it is always recognized.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is well structured where my induction gave a lot of useful information to start off with. The training programmes were structured in small chunks which made it easier to take in and learn. I received a lot of useful material to help me study and learn while also knowing exactly where to go if I needed support or help.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The support from training provider was sufficient. I had regular catch ups and I could easily contact my tutors and advisors. They seemed to always want to help and support my learning and did enjoy my courses a lot. I got told from very early where and how I could get the different types of support and information if I needed it which was useful.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support from my Employer is constant. I can not really ask for more. I am always surrounded by people willing to take out time to help and support me. My manager regularly schedules catch up sessions and reviews. HR is always very responsive in addressing issues that occur which I value very much.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Transport for London pays very well. My living costs are always covered and I am comfortable. Travel costs are non existent because of the staff oyster that is given to every employee. Daily and social costs are always catered for and my pay package is very healthy. The location where I work is very nice and close to my house so its always a short commute which is very useful for me.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Transport for London is a very large organization so there are always events and activities available to take part in. Football 5 a-side tournaments after work and games nights are fun. I get to meet new and interesting people on a regular basis. There are also ambassador initiatives which I have chosen to take part in which involves helping out at big events in London and assisting the transport system at stations.

  • 9. Would you recommend Transport for London to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend Transport for London because of the vast opportunities I have received and how much in enjoyed my apprenticeship. I am very well looked after and always feel valued. The work I do affects also a lot of people's lives so I always feel important so those are all reasons why I would not think twice to recommend TfL


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Transport for London?
  • Always being honest is very important. Showing enthusiasm and willingness to learn and work hard are vital to any role at Transport for London. Be calm and collected and being yourself are also important I feel. I think I would of liked to be told that I shouldn't worry so much and just relax and be confident in my own abilities. It helps a vast amount.
