I am involved in lots of different job roles as an apprentice Transport Planner. I get to work with the London Buses, on the TLRN, as well as liaising with stakeholders, option testing for schemes, realising benefits for schemes and dealing with correspondence on a range of issues from a range of people.
Yes, mostly communication, workplace skills and teamwork, all of which are important on a day-to-day basis.
I really enjoy my scheme as the style of work suits me, everyone helps to make sure I feel welcomed into the team, as well as making sure the work is challenging me.
Extremely, we are constantly reminded by Directors and Managers that, as Apprentices, we are important to the company. It is encouraging to hear that such people value our job role in the organisation.
Our programme is well organised, as we have 4 placements each lasting 6 months. These placements are set out for us, as is the work we do in order to match the skills standard set by our training provider.
Our training provider help us as we are given lots of points of contact, and they constantly communicate with us as learners, as well as our mentors.
We are helped a lot, via one - to - one meetings, performance updates and reviews, as well as advice and recognition given by the team we work in.
TfL offer a great salary package which includes a lot of employee benefits. I was aware of these benefits but did not expect to receive them all as an apprentice, however we get all the same benefits, holidays etc. as a full time employee.
TfL get us involved with lots of different companies and organisations, such as being a member of CIHT (Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation), and being involved in the LoHAC Apprentice Forum.
Yes
The organisation is brilliant to work for, as well as offering great job prospects for the future. We feel valued as part of a huge company, and receive a lot of support and guidance in areas we may not be sure about.
Be confident in yourself and never be afraid to ask. TfL want people who are enthusiastic and show an interest/willingness to learn, you do not need to come into the company with a wealth of knowledge.
