  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently undertaking the role of a Manufacturing apprentice; learning the everyday operations of Business unit 3, understanding new roles and shadowing my team managers. I have been given different responsibilities throughout the different roles within manufacturing and for leading my own learning through project work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Working for Bakkavor has given me the opportunity to better myself; learn new skills and build upon the existing skills I have acquired throughout my work experience, work on my communication skills via communicating with people throughout the hierarchy within the factory and meeting new people. The team that I currently work within made me feel really welcome when I began; introduced me to the working practices and procedures on site and helped me to settle into my role as an apprentice offering support and guidance.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The Bakkavor culture is unique, holds traditional values of a workplace environment and the interactions, behaviours and attitudes of my colleagues is second to none. I feel that I have been able to build up rapport on a personal level and find it easy to interact with my colleagues.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Bakkavor?
  • The highlights of working within this role are; that I have been given different responsibilities throughout the different roles within manufacturing. My manager involves me in all tasks the unit undertakes and always listens to my ideas.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I was attracted to joining the work force at Bakkavor Hitchen Foods as I deem this to be a company where I am able to build a career, form good working relationships and I now have the opportunity for career progression. From day one I was introduced to the Bakkavor Hitchens team and briefed about the day to day operations at Hitchen Foods.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Since beginning a career as a manufacturing apprentice at Bakkavor Hitchen Foods in September 2016, I have gained invaluable knowledge and experience in the following areas: Understanding of the day to day operations, a full training plan was put into place when I started and I am now shadowing my Team Manager(Tutor).

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have been working on a project for a reduction of mash waste to help improve the amount of waste we are dispersing in the factory. Working alongside of engineering, my team managers and production managers. I have been given full support from all the members listed.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • As a 20 year old, the salary fits well with me. I can afford a car and still spend most weekends socialising with friends.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • The company holds annual 'Fun Days' in order to raise money for select charities and involves the whole factory.
