I am a software developer and my general daily task is to write code and contribute to the source code of a project. We have daily standup meetings in the morning to keep up to date on progress. I interact with other team members on a daily basis as well as some external stakeholders periodically.
I have gained a large amount of technical knowledge as we work with new and relative languages and systems. I have also developed a number of people skills as well as communication is vital within our workplace.
I very much enjoy the programme as there is a good balance of training and being in the workplace. I would've like to have seen more training as we are soon approaching our last training course and will be in the workplace full time from then after.
I feel incredibly valued as we are given work at a level that is challenging but not too hard. This gives us an opportunity to develop our technical skills to a good level.
Within CGI I think our programme is well organized overall. I would've liked more clarity on general details of the overall apprenticeship (length, pay scales) but these are more clear now by talking to some higher level members.
Our apprenticeship assesor sometimes comes to visit our workplace to assess us and make sure we are getting on okay. However QA, our training provider, can sometimes be unreliable when replying to emails and giving us general details about our courses or what work has to be completed.
We recieved a lot of support from our company on both a project level as well as corporate level. Other project members are always happy to help with any problems we have with current tasks. We also have people managers that we can talk to about general queries and there is an HR service centre online if we have any technical queries or job queries.
I think for an apprenticeship our salary is very reasonable and I can usually comfortably live off what I'm earning. However I would some clarity on what our future salary will be as this seems to have been changed a few times.
There are a number of available activities outside of work however these are organized by member withing the office themselves. I would like to see some events held by CGI themselves in the future.
Yes
It gives you the oppurtinity to learn up to date and relevant technologies used within the industry that will be sought after by other companies in years to come.
Use your time wisely when completing out of hours work for your apprenticeship and don't leave it all until the last minute. Also be open to learning lots of new things whether this be on a technical or personal level.
