  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently in a testing role, specifically defect retesting. I am tasked with analysing defects as they are fixed and finding test scripts that cover what has been fixed and then executing said scripts to ensure the fix has gone through.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot about the life cycle of a project, specifically that of defects. I have learnt good practices of quality assurance and also solid communication skills between departments.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy working on my project, it's a very important piece of national infrastructure. The team I work with is full of friendly people which results in a nice relaxed atmosphere.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by CGI?
  • CGI take a lot of care for our considerations, upper management give feedback and insight into how the programme is developing. It can feel like my work isn't well recognised however as we tend to do the same work as our peers who have been in the industry for much longer.

    5/10

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The start of the programme is really rough, you get left on the bench while your first training finishes leaving a few weeks without anything structured to do until you can finally find a project to be placed on which will not even be what you expect. However after that you get treated as any other employee. Training sessions however are extremely well organised by the external provider QA.

    6/10

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I have constant support from QA, my assessor is always available to talk to if needed and provides excellent support for both professional and personal development.

    10/10

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Little is given to you unless you ask for it. You have your project manager who will support you in your day to day work. You also have a career manager who will guide you through your future aspirations. Then you have a line manager for any HR or related issues.

    8/10

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Starting salary is a little rough to get by on but it's the "National Living wage" which is more a government problem than CGI. Every 6 months there is a pay increase based on your performance however which brings us to a decent wage for starting out on.

    9/10

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Lots of activities are planned with social groups and such, you have to put the work in to find them however.

    8/10

  • 9. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a good place to get your foot in the door of the industry and get some good experience.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • Be professional, smart and outgoing in your interview and you'll be fine.
