  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It was hard to imagine what the training environment would be like before I started, but I was pleasantly surprised. The courses are taught well by knowledgeable tutors, there is always something engaging to be involved in, and you are always encouraged to get involved in as many projects as possible, which I thrive on. The company culture is to recruit from the very best available and to continue to train people throughout their career in the company thus keeping staff up to date with their knowledge of new and developing technologies. Having not known much about the company before I began I am very impressed with the way they do things and look forward to a career within the company.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the course seems to change from year to year, I know this from speaking to previous years' students. This, I believe is to benefit the upcoming students from the new intakes, however I cant help feeling like a guinea pig. Also students work at different paces so when some students have finished their necessary work there is not a lot to keep them occupied and more time seems to be spent chasing up those who are behind than providing extra work for those who want/need it.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Travelling is my biggest issue, however I was prepared for this and studied my budget very closely before accepting a position. I believe the salary falls within the legal requirement bracket.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • STEM activities are just one of the many outside work activities. sports and social events are run throughout the year to keep people engaged and strengthen links between departments, as well as promoting a good working environment and team building skills.

  • 9. Would you recommend Dstl to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I believe it is a very good company which deals with projects that you would never know existed, or have the opportunity to work with equipment that you would not get the chance to if you were not in the company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dstl?
  • Be honest about yourself, be prepared to work hard and network as much as you can, the more people that know you, the more opportunities will be available to you.
