Apprentice Technician Review

My job title is Apprentice Technician, my daily tasks include working as a CAD technician using Civil 3D and Micro station. My responsibilities include completing drainage design drawings and assisting experienced technicians in there role. I have been exposed to a variety of projects which include Drainage, Rail, and Rivers and Coastal.

I have learned many new skills such as using drawing programs like AutoCAD Civil's 3D and Micro station I have also used mapping software like MapInfo and modelling programs like Info Works. I have attended a training course in AutoCAD civil 3D a few months ago. I am currently studying at college towards my National Certificate then my HNC afterwards.

I Enjoy my programme as it gives me valuable experience into the engineering field from all aspects of work from the design through to the building process. I enjoy working as part of my team and believe to be an effective team player, I also work with engineers and technicians to gain experience in areas different from one another. It met my expectations greatly as I was not expecting to being this involved in projects so soon and given exposure creates more willingness to learn and develop new skills.

I feel valued by Atkins my manager is very supportive and is keen to show me new aspects of the business each week I also feel trusted to carry out a task I have been given and whenever I ask a question it is met with an answer and an explanation. I feel with more and more experience I can be given more responsibility's and different jobs to be completed.

My first couple of weeks weren't very structured at all I had very little experience with the programs and very little work to do therefore I did not receive the opportunity to get started in the way I though I would have. After this however I was given excellent opportunity's to contribute to work and feel I have picked up the skills of the programs like CAD quite quickly despite never using it before and not being taught it at college yet. I feel very well supported through my mentor who has shown me lots of information regarding the programs I have been exposed to.

I feel I have received a great deal of support through my work and CITB who has managed my apprenticeship from the start I can ask them any questions I feel are necessary and they give me an answer.

Likewise I receive a great deal and feel very open to talking about any issues I have or any issues that may come up in the future.

I find my package and salary very good it is meeting all my expectations for a first year apprentice.

Yes there is many events take play and many clubs set up for social get togethers such as table tennis, football and badminton clubs.

because it is a very good company to work for as there is a rise in work load coming in for the future we have recently won a major Scottish Water framework and the possibilities of company progression is there

Tips I would give would be to look over the companies history of when it was created etc. also what projects we have been involved in and what the future looks like for the company. Also to prepare questions in advance to ask your interviewer.
