  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as developer lead is to efficiently orchestrate tasks between members of the development team to meet any deadlines or work phase commitments. My role also includes a lot of meetings for things like requirements gathering, initial designs, review of work/sprints. Also I develop in Java & Javascript which is what I enjoy most.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many skills whilst working at CGI, specifically in new technologies such as Node JS/Mongo/Angular/. I have also learnt things in Azure and cloud services such as IaaS/PaaS. I have become better in management skills and also time organisation by ensuring deadlines are complete on time.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have enjoyed the programme to an extent, some development modules were really good and fun, whilst others weren't so good in my personal opinion. Sometimes module handbooks are updated way after tasks have been started which is not ideal. Overall though I have enjoyed the programme and have appreciated everyone's efforts in making the programme happen.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by CGI?
  • I feel valued in the work I do, there are member recognition awards for those that work hard and the share purchase plan/PPP incentives are good too. However pay reviews are often the downfall here at CGI, this is often out of the hands of the people you work close to even if they agree.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • During the course of the programme I have seen a few tutors come and go, some were not competent enough to be tutors and didn't offer the value you'd expect for University. Others were excellent. Winchester have tried to adapt given the situations that have occurred and I think they managed okay.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I would say there is sufficient support for me in my journey through the programme, but I know others on my course would disagree. I am happy with the level of support and haven't struggled to get a meeting when I need one. Sometimes the tutors are busy (understandably) so that's why those who need more support than others are often the ones to disagree with this.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I get every Thursday off as a study day so I am happy with the level of support as my employer. Project have allowed me to integrate some project aspects into my university work too. I haven't had the need to ask for more support from my employer so that in itself is good.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My pay is supposed to be structured and increase each year but this year I got a 0%, not happy with the pay review process in this company. There is not much that could be done in my situation so this is just my personal story. Expenses do not cover travel to/from Uni but that does not bother me.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Yes, plenty of social opportunities and networking opportunities outside of work, they place a big effort on making offices social. There is a social club for each office and numerous emails per week highlighting other networking and social events, I am personally not keen on these but the opportunities are definitely there.

  • 9. Would you recommend CGI to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Excellent place to get started at and gain lots of experience in, with a big range of projects to get involved in with diverse technologies. I have been very lucky to be given the opportunity to work on different projects as a developer and gain the experience I now have.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CGI?
  • Ensure your CV is up to date and offers relevant experience, make it stand out in a professional way. Make sure you are coherent, confident and knowledgeable in your interview, sell your self well with relevant experience and knowledge and you should be fine. Be honest during the interview and ask a lot of questions if CGI can offer you what you want.
