1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am doing a level 4 apprenticeship in IT support & networking and my current job roles is a member of desktop support. My role includes making sure employees within the firm are able to do their job without any issues with their PCs/software. We support the investment banking divisions as well as; operations, HR, corporate and facilities.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have been fortunate enough to gain a few qualifications in my time. The main ones to note were the ITIL Foundation and Comptia A+. Internal training was provided for the ITIL but the A+ was done via the apprenticeship recruitment company and on the job training. I have learnt how to feel comfortable in my job role and also, what is expected of me.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I feel like it has given more than expected as I did not expect not learn so much and be so involved within the team as I am an apprentice. It if enjoyable as I am able to do more for the team and also assist when possible as the experience gained has made me feel more comfortable.

4. How valued do you feel by Nomura?

I feel valued in terms of my manager wanting to keep me which means I must be doing the right things within the company. Also, we, as apprentices, get articles on the home pages showing our progress.

5. How well organised/structured is your programme?

We have monthly reviews with our assessor which allows us to get our work that we have done checked to sign off the unit. We also are allowed time out, if needed, to complete the units on time. Support is also provided by various people if needed so are not short on help when needed.

6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?

As mentioned before, an assessor will come in every month and gives the chance to answer any questions we have. Also, we can email or assessor who would be able to give support and guidance if needed.

6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?

Managers are always asking if I have the support needed to complete the apprenticeship on time which helps in knowing that they support what I am doing and want to see how I am getting on. HR also do the same in ensuring that the support is there and to make sure everything is going good.

7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?

Overall, I feel the salary does cover the cost of travel and general going out and social life. It is expensive in London so financial backing is always good.

8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?

There is football sessions on some Fridays that is emailed out and I am able to attend these which is always good to go to. The company also hosts many charity events that have open invites.

9a. Would you recommend Nomura to a friend? *

9b. Why? *

When I started, I did not know much about working in a corporate environment and also working in IT. Because of this experience, I am able to feel comfortable in working in both banking divisions and in IT teams. I feel this is mostly down to how we have had our time to develop and the training given.

10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Nomura? *

Be calm in interviews as the people doing the interviews, you will see them around a lot. Make sure you tell the truth and work as hard as you can so you can pick up as much experience as possible.
