Apprentice Civil Engineer Review

I am an apprentice civil engineer. I work on many aspects such as simple CAD, TTRO's and getting together folders for highways design schemes. I interact with different staff members from the office and external companies such as roadspace to put together scheme packages. I get work from my manager who advises me on what needs to be done next.

I have learnt many new skills such as basic CAD, writing of TTRO documents, email writing, I have been site inducted (this includes CSCS training), assessing data and also interpersonal skills involving communicating with other teams. I am on a two year college course which involves learning about the built environment.

I enjoy my programme quite a bit as I have developed new skills and although a lot of the work involves the same skills I do not feel it is repetitive as each scheme is different.

I feel my manager gives me a lot of praise and is very understanding of my capability. He has tried to get the most out of me by getting me site inducted quickly and bringing me along to meetings so that I fully understand the process which I am taking part in. Beyond my manager there isn't many people who push me but in my PDR my performance is reviewed and new targets are set for me.

I think that my programme is well organised as things such as PDR reviews are pout in place to check my progress. However my manager who I get work from is a contractor and is soon leaving so I hope that my apprenticeship stays on the same path as it is currently.

My manager gives me a lot of support both in and out of work which is good as I feel we have a good relationship. He advises me when changes need to be made to my work and then explains why which I think is brilliant. I enjoy working with him (Pete Fisher) and hope that my work stays on the same path as it is now.

I believe Motts support me a lot as they offer a lot that other apprenticeships don't such as lunch and learns, compensating college parking ect and there is always someone to go to if I have a problem - it helps that everyone is friendly!

I think my wage is a good wage considering it is my first year. I am not sure how my package will increase in the coming years but I hope that it does increase slightly as I am now 18 and have more costs to cover.

Yes, there are many events, many sourced from the sorts and social group who do regular events such as meals, cinema and theatre trips at discounted prices! Not only that there is activities such as football and badminton that you can do on a weekly basis if you wish to.
