  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am in my 1st year of a mechanical engineering apprenticeship with DSTL this year is mostly academic i.e. learning the skills and terminology to work in an engineering workshop.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learn how to operate a milling machine. On a Thursday afternoon I am doing milling we are given a engineering drawing that we need to make the tolerance on my current job is +/-0.05mm

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I am enjoying using the machines and but some of the lessons are quite long winded. however I am looking forward to next year when I will be on placement.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Dstl?
  • I feel that apprentices are valued to DSTL because they give a job to 95% of the people who take the apprenticeship. And during the apprenticeship we get to explore the different parts of the company

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is quite well structured but the we should have been given our PEOs by now and we haven't got much to do on Wednesday afternoons because the Projects that we were given weren't well planed.

  • I get as much support as I required to perform my job and to let me learn new skills properly. If I don't under stand something I feel confinable to ask.

  • If I don't under stand something I feel confinable to ask my line manager. I get as much support as I required to perform my job and to let me learn new skills properly.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I walk to work. I have enough money to pay rent and to buy my food. I also mange to save my money. I am saving up for a car so I can travel hove more often.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • yes we did a weeks team building exercises in breathy this was a great opportunity to improve my communication, organisation and team building skills.

  • 9. Would you recommend Dstl to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I think it is a great opportunity to earn while you learn. It also you get to explore the different fields in the business. You also get qualifications at the end of the apprenticeship


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Dstl?
  • Try to come up with good examples of when you worked well in a team. and don't be worried about not knowing much about the company as it is very hard to research.
