What does HMGCC actually do?

In simple terms, HMGCC is responsible for ensuring our Government’s communications are totally secure. In practice, that means taking the very latest communication technology, exploring its capabilities, then pushing them to a whole new level. It’s a far-reaching challenge, and one that calls for a diverse range of technical and engineering talents.

What are the options for apprentices?

Broadly speaking, HMGCC offers four apprenticeship programmes: Computing and Systems Development, Mechanical Design Engineering, Mechanical Manufacturing Engineering and Electronic & Electrical Engineering. The last, however, is split into two streams – one leading to an Electronics Technician’s role, the other focused squarely on Automated PCB Assembly.

What does the first year involve?

Whatever programme they join, HMGCC apprentices spend their first twelve months learning full-time at Bedford College. Experience has proved just how important that year can be: apart from helping them develop their knowledge and practical skills, it gives them chance to bond as a group and start developing those all-important life-skills too.

And where do they go from there?

During their second year (and third on certain programmes), HMGCC apprentices work alongside and learn on the job with the experienced engineers and technical specialists. This is where they get to put what they’ve learned into practice and start working on live projects and delivering real results.

What’s the working environment like?

Already, Hanslope Park in Milton Keynes is a pretty impressive backdrop to any career. Apprentices can get hands-on with everything from advanced CAD, automated PCB and 3D metal printing systems to the very latest networking, wireless and mobile technologies. At the start of 2015, however, HMGCC will be opening a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility on site, which will take things to a whole new level.

What qualifications do they look for?

Across the board, five GCSEs is a must, including Maths, English, all at grade C or above. Beyond that, all the two-year programmes require A Levels in Maths at grade C or above, and some demand another in a science subject too.

What makes these apprenticeships so rewarding?

Of course, there are certain benefits that apply to all apprenticeships. Not least of which is the chance to start earning instead of racking up debts like undergrads at university. But what sets these particular apprenticeships apart is HMGCC’s objective as an organisation. In short, the work they do is of genuinely national importance. And there aren’t many apprentices who can honestly say that.
