  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an associate accountant. I work on a broad range of clients providing different service lines, such as accounts preparation, audit, VAT returns and management accounts. I have recently begun to in-charge junior members of the team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I qualified AAT in August 2014 and I am now half way through my ACCA qualification. I attend internal training sessions which develop my audit and accounts expertise. We have regular technical updates so I learn a lot about the new accounting standards and other areas. When I first began at Grant Thornton, I didn't know anything about accounts or audits, I can now fully complete a compilation and most stages of an audit.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my job. I love the people I work with, there is a real team ethic in our office. I enjoy the variety of work, no two days are the same.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Grant Thornton?
  • I do feel as though I am a valued member of the team, I gain recognition through rewards and positive constructive feedback which motivates me to work hard. I am heavily involved in several aspects of our department, from issuing training to helping on the social committee.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The initial induction was fantastic, it gave me a solid foundation of knowledge for the work I was due to commence. Since then I have had regular training and support. The study programme for both AAT and ACCA has been brilliant the courses and tutors have been of such a high standard and really informative.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The tutors at Kaplan are brilliant, they are very approachable and their knowledge is of such a high level. They answer any question I have with ease. There are plenty of resources I can use to help me gain as much knowledge as possible for my exams. I enjoy going to college, there is always a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a high level of support from my employer. I have an assigned people manager who is extremely approachable and willing to help me with any queries or problems I have. I also have a mentor who helps me with any informal (or sometimes formal) issues I have.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary is of a good, competitive level and does meet my living costs. My travel costs are reimbursed at a good allowance and when working on away jobs, my subsistence and hotel is catered for.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many opportunities outside work, from attending business development events to playing badminton with the department. There is always a wide range of activities available. There is an annual volunteering day which we all have the opportunity to attend.

  • Yes

  • Grant Thornton is a great company to work for, the teams are very friendly, approachable and helpful. The training is of an exceptional level and the benefits and allowances available are of a great level.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Grant Thornton?
  • The application process is very competency based, it's not just about what you have on paper, it is very much about the person you are and what you can offer to the firm. Work experience is key valuable experience which stands you in good stead for any job opportunity.
