  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a software developer apprentice for Evri, I work within the mobile app development squad with a number of other developers, testers and project managers. I mostly work coding in Kotlin using Android Studio to help complete tickets and add updates or features to the app. We have daily stand-ups and other squad meetings to update the team as to what we're working on as well as to assign work and tickets. Within the apprenticeship I also have to attend live lessons with QA and complete assignments for them which I do as well as any work I get given by the mobile app squad. The work I do for QA and Evri come hand in hand, as I am mostly writing about what I do within Evri, in the QA tasks.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learned a large amount of new skills including but not limited to familiarity with the programming language Kotlin as I knew a bit of Java before hand but never knew Kotlin which is something I've really enjoyed learning as it's similar to Java which is a language I like. Some other things I've also learned and have gotten familiar with are DevOps and Agile principles, AWS, as well as learning how to work within a company, as a member of a team collaborating with others.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy it a lot since software development has always been a passion of mine and I've wanted to get into developing software and working with a team to do so for quite a while and I'm really appreciative that Evri has not only given me the opportunity to do so but the team members I've been working with are all so supportive and I always look forward to my next piece of work.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program structure is organised really well, for example, when trainers for QA have been sick we have been notified and the appropriate things have been re-scheduled quickly.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Evri gives me the opportunity to pick up as much work as I need, in order to get my apply tasks done while also being understanding that the work load I can take on is sometimes limited with me having to attend at times 3-5 day long live sessions with QA as well as work on the documentation for assignments for the apprenticeship. I have support from a previous apprentice who has regular catch-up calls with me to check things are going well and also just to talk about any questions I might have regarding the apprenticeship. I also have these same catch-up calls with my line manager.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • QA is really helpful when it comes to work, I have frequent catch up sessions with my trainer and he is always willing to help with assignments and other work where he can.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel quite confident that qualification helps me to perform better in my role as the topics that have been covered in it are always very relevant to what is industry standard.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Evri host an IT Christmas party which I went to this Christmas just passed, that was a great way to meet people who I work with who I hadn't met already, as the work I do is remote mostly. There are also several other activities in the Leeds office and also remotely hosted events like trivia quizzes.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Evri to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I've told my friends many times in the past that they should have a look into Evri as an employer, and for an apprenticeship because the way the company treats it's apprentices is a much better option than a lot of other companies I've heard about as well as giving me the ability to stay home instead of going off to do a degree in university, I'm really grateful to be able to work for Evri and I hope to be here for much longer.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Evri?
  • I would say simply work hard, be genuine, and have a passion for your work and for learning and be willing to grow as a person and employee.
