  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Naval architecture at babcock offers a wide range of opportunities. currently i am with the alignment team, with this we use precise lasers to get measurements, we also do laser mapping/scanning which can get an image which can be modelled on

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i have learnt many new skills, stability calculations, docking skills for vessels, laser scanning, and many more. this apprenticeship has also boosted my confidence and communication skills massively

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i really enjoy it, it provides a really good balance of being able to joke around while getting work done, this makes work very enjoyable

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • overall very well structured, there are a couple issues, the end point assessors (or lack of them) being the main one as it provides uncertainty of when we can finish the apprenticeship. aside from that i find it very good as you can try out various different roles within the sectors to find what you enjoy

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • i receive lots of support, whenever anything is needed there are various people i can ask who can help or sort the issues, it works very well as you meet new contacts while trying to sort the issues who can also help in future

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • we received lots of support, any sections that we struggled on we could ask and get extra support and the many college lecturers meant that if we didn't understand one method of explanation the other lecturer can usually help in other ways to sort it

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i fell like it helps a lot, it has provided a real foundation to my knowledge in my role meaning i can take on harder jobs and learn more within the job, this resulting in me progressing more

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • yes, i help out with the early careers, with this i do talks and careers fairs at school, this has boosted my speaking skills and confidence while helping the company out along the way. also there are various works 'does' which departments go on, this is a social do tho

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • i find it a very enjoyable place to work with good pay and social aspect, the workload is good and i also enjoy the hours, start early/finish early so you can have afternoons off in the sun (when applicable)


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • get a good project sorted for the interview, make sure you demonstrate skills following instructions and evaluating risks
