  • My role which involves daily contact with patients and colleagues alike. On a day-to-day basis, you will often be responsible for a range of tasks and duties. These typically involve performing eye examinations to detect vision problems and eye diseases, prescribing ocular pharmaceuticals (eye drops, glasses or contact lenses), liaising with other medical professionals to refer patients for additional treatment where necessary and providing advice on vision care, sports vision, and lifestyle choices which may affect vision. You may also provide advice on specialist contact lenses, ocular prostheses, and ocular surgery, as well as providing general eye health information and advice to the general public. Additionally, you will need to ensure the patient records are up to date and keep accurate and detailed records of patient consultations. You will also need to adapt to any changes in legislation, technology and equipment in order to ensure patient safety and compliant practice.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have had the opportunity to develop and learn new skills such as ocular health screening, ocular pharmacology, managing ophthalmic emergencies, and understanding the latest advances in ophthalmic technology. I have also gained additional experience in patient care, counselling, communication, problem-solving, and IT skills. Developing my interpersonal, clinical and technical skills has been invaluable in providing quality patient care.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot. My work allows me to apply the theoretical knowledge and experience that I gained during my studies, while interacting directly with patients is very rewarding. I find it extremely satisfying when I am able to successfully identify vision issues or eye health concerns in my patients. Additionally, the collaboration and camaraderie with fellow colleagues is also very enjoyable.

  • My programme is very well structured and organised. All of the tasks and duties that I must complete in a day are clearly outlined in the form of a daily schedule, which allows me to get through all of my responsibilities and tasks efficiently. Furthermore, going through patient notes each day and having regular meetings ensures that my colleagues and I are all on the same page.

  • My employer provides a great degree of support. The team is often present to offer advice, answer questions and provide reassurance during challenging clinical situations. My employer also provides career development opportunities such as training and certifications that allow me to further my professional development.

  • I have received tremendous support from my training provider. I am constantly provided with online resources such as tutorials, webinars and e-learning platforms which help me understand the theoretical knowledge behind my work and make sure that I am up to date with the latest industry developments. Moreover, my training provider is always available to answer my queries and provide constructive feedback.

  • I feel that my qualification greatly helps me to perform better in my role. Completing my qualification has provided me with the knowledge that I need to assess patients effectively, prescribe efficiently and advise responsibly. Moreover, my qualification has also helped me to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to the technological and medical advancements that are commonplace in the profession.

  • Yes, there are several extra-curricular activities that I can get involved with at work. These include professional networking events, social activities, and sports teams. Participating in all these activities can help me build relationships with my peers, gain more knowledge and insights in my field, and improve my skills.
