  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role currently is as a member of the control team testing substation control systems. I go through and make sure all the inputs, analogues are all performing as configured. I get rotated round different departments and have been rotated once already. This helps get a taste of every team and is good for learning.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have definitely learned a range of hard and soft skills, whilst developing my own determination and problem solving skills. I have improved my planning skills and critical thinking. Whilst completely learning how to test control systems and design wiring diagrams for protection systems. I have definitely learned a range of hard skills throughout my time here.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is great as I get an opportunity to gain skills in multiple different disciplines. This is due to being rotated around a multitude of teams, which allows me to choose which department I prefer at the end of my apprenticeship. The programme and the people involved help make the work extremely interesting and enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My Programme is well structured, allowing me to experience all disciplines within my apprenticeship. I have a long timescale for my overall apprenticeship and know when I finish my college training etc. However, the rotations can be a bit random at times as the pencilled in rotation may not have any work for you or already have an apprentice. This is fine though as it allows for more time in one team.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Throughout my time here I have received continuous support, helping with any issues I have and even having reviews to ensure my college is going smoothly and that I am doing good mentally etc. I also receive support throughout my work in every team I have been in. The teams have been really supportive in the work I've been doing.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • They provide great support through the use of the reviews which allow me to explain any gaps I think I'm missing or any issues I have in the qualification. This allows for plenty of help if I don't understand something or haven't met something in my apprenticeship standard yet.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The things I learn at college have had a direct impact on my work so far. For example, learning about Kirchoff's law is useful within the configuration of protection systems. The work I do at college provides me with a better understanding of any task I am set at work.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Currently we have a 5-a-side football team which plays on tuesdays, (depending on numbers of course). This allows us to get together with colleagues and have a break and a laugh after work, and helps to create new friendships and is a nice way to get out and exercise, which is key.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Siemens to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Siemens has been a great place to work and learn for me. Surrounded by extremely clever engineers etc who are always there to offer a helping hand. The people I have worked with so far have all been a great help and very friendly and easy to get on with.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Siemens?
  • Keep an open mind and attempt any activity you're faced with to the best of your ability. Mistakes can be common but are one of the best ways to learn effectively. Some activities may feel difficult to understand at first but have a go at it and day by day you're sure to achieve more and more.
