  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • DevOps agile team with standard practices (sprints, scrum masters, rotations, tickets, kanban, retrospective) etc. I get to work on all aspects of website development, from the concept of a project to working on something bigger, backend, frontend, infrastructure). Engaging with stakeholders and technical specialists to deliver a polished final product.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • DevOps skills have been picked up - continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) practices for automated software builds, testing, and deployment. Containerisation technologies like Docker and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes. Infrastructure as code (IaC) using tools like Terraform. Monitoring and logging systems (Prometheus, Grafana). The entire process of building a pipeline and having it successfully work.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is a difficult programme, the content can be very spread out or close together, and the work environment has a lot to offer and a lot to learn from. It will be a very fast-paced course with a lot of opportunities to learn and excel. I enjoy it, but it is definitely not a smooth ride.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Bud provides great organisation, as it allows me to have a clear overview of my work and helps me plan ahead. It enables me to identify the tasks that need to be accomplished and ensures that I understand what needs to be done in advance. Additionally, Bud offers me the opportunity to meet the requirements of my work by allowing me to request specific tasks and specify the areas I would like to focus on with my boss. This level of collaboration ensures that I can effectively contribute to the goals of my work and meet the necessary criteria.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • A great amount of support. We have access to expert technical specialists that can help with issues we have. I can organise with my employer about doing specific activities to show evidence to further my apprenticeship, and I get given additional time to work on apprenticeship work if I find it necessary.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive valuable feedback and many opportunities to enhance my work from the training provider. It's commendable that they promptly address my queries and provide advice within a few days, which greatly benefits my progress. Being able to see the work I need to submit way ahead of time gives me the chance to seek the best evidence possible.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Thanks to this qualification that I am training for, I possess essential skills for Developer Operations, forming a strong foundation. The technical knowledge I've gained has been instrumental in my progress thus far. It has been a pivotal factor in enabling me to advance and excel in this field.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At my workplace, I'm fortunate to have numerous extracurricular activities to participate in. Sky offers an extensive array of workshops, events, and initiatives, such as monthly social gatherings, departmental meet-ups, enhanced work-life balance opportunities, sports teams, professional networking events, as well as inclusive gatherings like LGBTQ+ and women in tech events.

  • I am incredibly fortunate to be involved in work that aligns perfectly with my long-standing interests and aspirations. Within a supportive and harmonious work environment, I am able to pursue my passion while benefiting from the expertise of my colleagues. In addition, I have access to exciting extracurricular activities such as workshops and monthly social events, all while enjoying the fantastic flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement.

  • When preparing to apply, it's essential to take a few key steps. Begin by thoroughly researching the field you're interested in, considering its fast-paced nature. Having a solid foundation of knowledge will be advantageous. Additionally, cultivating a genuine love for learning is crucial, as it enables you to absorb information enthusiastically. Embrace openness and social interaction, allowing your authentic self to shine without inhibitions.
