  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a software engineer for Sky. This involves writing front end and back end code. I work with 2 other apprentices and we are currently developing a brand new app to be used in house. We have daily team meetings to discuss what we have achieved, what we are working on and if anything is blocking our progress.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Before I began my apprenticeship I had no coding experience, so I have learned many new skills which I am using every day in my job. I have written both front end and back end code in 2 different languages, including creating databases. I have created several small projects as well as the app we are developing for Sky.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme. The weekly sessions with the training provider help to develop new skills which can then be transferred into my role at work. The programme provides a relaxed learning environment with the focus on learning and development. It has also been a great opportunity to meet new people.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is really well structured. The initial bootcamp gave a brief introduction to many different topics. This is then followed by three more in depth modules. A different topic is introduced each week, which is supported by videos, live workshops and coding exercises. Weekly projects provide the opportunity to apply new skills.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Sky are really supportive of their apprentices. Both the early careers team and my line manager are in regular contact to ensure everything is going well. We have a day each week dedicated to our apprenticeship work and other self learning tasks. The company provides a nurturing environment to allow apprentices to develop at their own pace.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Alongside weekly workshops which focus on different topics, the training provider also offer support through weekly drop in sessions which focus on module work, well being or durable skills. Coaches are really supportive. They are always happy to help and usually offer a speedy response if messaged on Slack. They will answer questions or offer 1:1 meetings if there are things you need help with.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification provides the opportunity to learn many new skills which can be directly applied to my role. Alongside coding skills they provide experience in presenting projects, developing relationships and communication skills. I have grown in confidence over the few months I have been on the course and this has been recognised by my line manager at work.
