  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day-to-day basis I work with teams that support Sky's broadcasting facilities. This includes designing/installing/supporting broadcast systems. Often I will be liaising with productions to make sure that equipment and platforms are operating as they should be, if not then our teams will strive to fix these faults ASAP. I work with manufacturers and external parties when we have problems that require external intervention.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. My technical skills in the broadcasting sector have grown infinitely (not anything taught in school!), this is from both my experience in the workplace but also the degree I do in Broadcast Systems Engineering. My soft skills have grown massively too, working in such a large company means there are so many opportunities to exercise these soft skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my programme, I look forward to going to work/uni. The wide variety of tasks that I perform at work keeps me on my toes! Going to Uni is great, not just for the learning but for the interaction with lots of people in the same boat as me,

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In advance of me starting University I got a schedule of modules and lessons that we would be having over the three years. At work, my manager structures the programme really well and often my placements at work will line up with my University modules (which is incredibly helpful for information retention!).

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Sky run plenty of 'learning labs', which I have always walked away feeling positive and definitely better primed for employment! Sky are very understanding that this is my first 'proper' job, and as such receive plenty of support from the people around me when it comes to settling into new teams, getting up-to-speed and any advice that I need.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Ravensbourne have worked incredibly hard to find the 'right people for the right job', our lecturers are people from the industry who have (probably) over a hundred years of combined experience in Broadcast environments. They've also got a great student services department (which although I haven't used) I understand is great.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification is mostly directly related to my job, so it's constantly filling in any gaps from what I've been doing at my job. This means that when I go back to my job from Uni I can take that knowledge back and apply it at work, thus meaning I perform better.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, Sky have many communities that hold social events. They also do lots of company-wide events such as summer socials and family days. Sky are partnered with many industry boards, so they host events at our work which always come with professional networking opportunities. Overall, I think their extra-curricular opportunities are good.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Sky to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's a great place to work. We are paid well, get great benefits, the work is fun, the education partner is good, the people are very nice and inclusive! Also, in terms of technology, Sky are at the bleeding edge and do not sit still, you can be assured that you will always be working on the latest and greatest!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sky?
  • Be yourself in interviews, and relax! I found the process really great for someone doing all of this for the first time. Come to the interview with examples of when you've demonstrated your 'soft skills' in the past, and do your research on Sky and make sure you are enthused after that research.
