  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an engineer we are responsible for quality assurance on site. This can be anything from daily records of site to completed Item Test Plans for million £ projects. its not all office work though... often we are reading drawings and setting out locations and levels for workers on site to assure the quality of work is up to standard.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • This apprenticeship allows for the development of social skills as well as professionalism because as an engineer you are constantly moving from site to site meeting new people. This helps with confident and team building skills because you may not be with the same people as you was last week so you learn to get to know all the people you work with and create bonds.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Engineering is definitely an enjoyable occupation. Your day to day jobs change consistently which allows for new skills to be developed and provides a good balance with office and site work. This also means that you will always have something to do and never be bored from repetitive activities that cause poor job satisfaction.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • This apprenticeship is structured will with 10 weeks a year in Leeds college providing you with some relevant skills that will be needed before going onto site as well as giving you a great opportunity to meeting new people on the apprentice with the same interests as yourself. This is a great time to make new relationships and gather contacts for the future.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The team you work with when you first start the apprenticeship provide you with all the help you might need to success in this industry as as help you learn all the relevant skills needed. A lot of the skills are learnt on site when you start but any help or training needed can be very quickly organised by your employer.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • A LOT! All the training needed will be provided while on site, in the office or as a part of your off-the-job training. This is great because it allows for time away from work to improve your skills or learn new ones and it fully paid for and supported by your employer.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification received at the end of the apprenticeship is not only recongnised in the industry by all professionals but also used to give promotions and responsibilities to those who strive to succeed and are able to learn new skills to excel past their peers and want to take on more responsibility.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At BAM we have lots of socials events that are organsied by the company. For example, a Christmas party is help and paid for every year by BAM in each region celebrate the years work and as a thank you for all the work that was completed. Meetings outside of work can be planned with your peers anytime and is great to meet new people and improve existing relationships.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • BAM is a great company to start with as they provide a good starting salary that reflex's the work they ask you to do. The people here are friendly and welcoming because they have a lot of experience with apprentices so they don't expect a lot of existing knowledge but they do expect you to be able and willing to learn.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • Be willing to learn new skills all the time. The people here are willing to help so you need to be willing to listen and work your hardest to provide any help you can to the job you are put on. It is a great opportunity for anyone that wants to learn and earn!
