  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I help engineers design highways schemes and manage projects. This includes creating engineering drawings, modelling schemes using digital software and designing things according to legal standards. I also manage budgets, project forecasts and timesheets for members of my company and sub contractors.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a lot of digital skills. This includes MS excel, Autodesk AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bentley Openroads etc. I have gained good people skills through my interactions as assistant project manager and I have learnt budgeting and time management skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy it. I work with some great people and I am supported really well in all that I do. I am always given new opportunities for learning.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well. I always have upcoming tasks and there are multiple people in my team who are aware of my development needs and will help me to achieve those.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • They are very good at checking up on me and making sure my work and university is going well. I am given time to study and complete assignments and I have people to talk to if I feel overwhelmed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I go to university in block release and so I have focused weeks where I am without work to focus on my qualifications. I am given study leave too.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • At the moment I struggle to completely see the correlation between my university work and the work I do in the office. The only overlap is perhaps to business management aspect which has helped me have better understanding of the work that I do in some areas.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am part of the apprentice network and the Arup Leeds running group. My team is very social and we often have days/evenings out.

  • Yes

  • Great company to work for, interesting projects to work on, a great team of people, a very friendly environment.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • They want your personality to shine through in your interview and so ensure you would be a good fit for the team. They pride themselves on excellence so consider that.
