  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am given markups from engineers that I work on projects with that I am asked to complete. Being mechanically biased, these are often ventilation. I will then model these markups in Revit and coordinate with other services. I do a lot of 3D modelling for projects which is fun and having a real impact on the buildings that I work on.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Everything that I have learnt with Arup are all new skills. From modelling services (mechanical, electrical and public health), setting up and printing sheets, communicating with all levels within the London team and external companies, etc. I continue to learn new skills and develop existing skills every single day while working with Arup.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love the programme. I am constantly given good exposure to different projects which makes me really feel part of a team and that I have a useful impact on producing projects to a high standards. There are many people who have completed the same apprenticeship as me so there is a lot of support as well.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a clear guide and target with the programme. One day of college a week works well to produce a good work and learning split. I also feel like I am always learning and progressing at work. The training provider also gives me a lot of work to keep me busy.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive lots of support from Arup. There are plenty of people who have completed the same apprenticeship that I am currently doing, they are always more than happy to help with both work and college work. There are also grads that have set up sessions to go over college work in detail that are great!

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There are meetings every 3 months or so where we go over work that I have been doing. We talk about how college is going and setting new targets. Aside from this, the connection between the training provider and I is almost nothing. They rarely reply to emails and I do not receive feedback from them on work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification that I will gain will 100% benefit me in my role. I think that the work that I have to do with the training provider is somewhat beneficial, but there seems to be a lot of it that is repeating itself and not very much needed for me.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At Arup, there are PLENTY of extra curricular events which is brilliant for socialising and meeting new people outside of an office environment. They range from sports like cricket, football and running to social activities that occur multiple times a month like pub trips, go karting, theatres, pottery, museums. The social side of work is very good at Arup.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Arup is a brilliant company that I love and am proud to work at. In a year and a half I have worked on many different projects, developed my skills and knowledge massively, had the opportunities and exposure to progress massively and have settled in seamlessly. I really enjoy working as an apprentice with Arup.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
  • Be confident in yourself. Do some research on projects that Arup have worked on. It really is a great company so a brief bit of research gives insight as to what you might be working on, good luck!
