  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Joining stands up to understand what everyone else in the team is doing and staying up to date with tickets. Also picking up tickets and pairing up with someone else in the team and working with them so that we are able to gain experience by completing work and also learn more practical knowledge.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I learnt new DevOps tools such as Gitlab and Github. I also was exposed to new CI/CD tools such as TeamCity. Talking in daily stand ups has also improved my confidence as I am able to speak about what I am doing with the rest of the team without feeling like I am making no contributions.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I do enjoy my program. However, I do not think a DevOps engineering program is well suited. This is because this is a field that many people get in the later stages of their career. For someone with very few knowledge or experience things can get overwhelming and its hard to catch up

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is well structured. However, I do believe more training and expertise should be given, given how complex DevOps is and just how much things there are to learn. Also it is difficult picking up tickets when you have no knowledge as things can seem gibberish and make not a lot of sense.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have a lot of support from my employer. I have a very good manager who always goes further beyond for me and is always more than happy to help me where possible. Only issue is that he has his own work and so it is not very ideal constantly asking for help and always relying on someone else. A lot of skill gaps are things learnt on the job so it is hard to fill that gap yourself.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider provides online classrooms that occur on a monthly/termly basis. They also provide a lot of online resources that are very helpful in a theoretical stance, however when it comes to actual work practicality it is very difficult to replicate. The learning instructors are also very helpful in answering questions when asked.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The training they provide is very specific to the role. It contains a lot of information that is very useful and helps a lot. I do believe the qualification will help me in my role, but I do require a lot more knowledge and expertise I feel like if I want to succeed in this field.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I am currently not involved in any work extra curricular activities. I would like to get involved in sporting events or other networking events or even voluntary things. I just have not heard about much opportunities or found things that I am interested in and want to get involved with.

  • 9a. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a very good place to work. The people here top to bottom are all very helpful and friendly and will always go beyond for you. It is a place that promotes collaboration and inclusiveness so even if you feel left out there will be someone there that will make you fit in and feel a part of the team.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • If you want to enter a field of tech having something that you are knowledgeable in definitely helps. This does not need to be tech related. Whilst it may help to have some prior tech knowledge, it is not a must. Having something such as a business and the skills you show managing it definitely helps. This can be how you interact with customers, how you manage sales, track profits and in general how you stay organised. These are all skills that can be transferred and interviewers can pick up whether you are telling the truth or not.
