In an average week during 4 days at work my everyday role involves; Site inspections, incident investigation, auditing, maintaining everyday environmental compliance, managing environmental risks, maximising opportunities for sustainable developement, client engagement and data collection/ assessment to aid reporting and environmental footprint modelling.
As an opportunity to learn apprenticeships are completely unmatched, I have developed a broad range of scientific/ technical role specific skills and numerous soft skills as part of my learning journey so far, and continue to pick up something new nearly every day.
Massively, although balancing a degree and demanding job is not at all easy, it is so rewarding to put what you learn in theory into practice within your industry.
As a relatively new apprenticeship programme the structure has evolved as I have been completing my course, which has involved a few changes and amendments.
Skanska are a brilliant employer, as well as accommodating the structured learning I undertake at university, within my everyday role they have allowed me to rotate around the company to gain exposure to as many different learning opportunities and experiences as possible.
There are multiple resources and contacts at University we are encouraged to call upon for support, including health and wellbeing resources to academic support services.
Although not always directly relatable to my everyday activities, (Volcanos and construction sites do not tend to mix) the knowladge I build whilst I am at university helps to build a wider understanding of sustainability and environmental science, improving my overall competency to excell within my role.
As part of a number of professional bodies I have numerous opportunities to attend webinars, industry events and expos, even complete site visits to industries outside of Skanska. Skanska/s own Womxn’s Network and Mental Health and Wellbeing Network are also great resources.
