  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Trainee Civil Engineer, I am employed with Skanska Oxfordshire Highways. I worked as a construction site supervisor for a year, and my daily responsibilities included supervising work, ensuring proper H&S on site, ensuring proper traffic management on site, creating and reviewing site files, conducting site safety inspections, and reporting any delays or unexpected changes to project managers. In my upcoming rotation, I will be working as engineering support on a project that is related to bridge and design

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I improved my ability to manage my time as well as the people and resources on the job. I took personal responsibility for myself, the projects, and everyone involved. I also gained knowledge about the risks, safety precautions, specifications, and other aspects of highway maintenance. I am now learning design processes in my new position and completing projects from the perspective of design support.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is incredibly fun for me. I appreciate the daily assistance given, and I look forward to taking on new tasks. I get to participate in a variety of activities and gain the range of abilities needed by civil engineers because of the wide range of projects. I am proud to be here and I think that this programme will help me become a decent, qualified engineer.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Both at the university and at work, my programme is nicely organised. This six-year degree apprenticeship consists of five years of academic study and one year of end-point assessment preparation, which is an IEng review with ICE. At work, I rotate every 6 to 12 months, which provides me the chance to practise a variety of tasks and develop a wide range of valuable abilities.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer and top engineers are completely behind me. I must set aside a minimum of 20% of my working hours for off-the-job training and university leave as per my training agreement. My coworkers and managers support me with concerns related to both my academic work and the difficulties I encounter at work.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have access to a variety of physical and digital resources from the library and plenty of extra help, such as maths support classes and academic writing support. I also have unrestricted access to the expensive engineering software. Academic tutors are accessible at all times to offer advice or assistance in resolving questions about the course material or other engineering-related difficulties.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I am learning knowledge and abilities that are crucial for the job of a civil engineer, both theoretically and practically. I take advantage of my teachers extensive knowledge and the university curriculum, which is designed to meet the needs of the modern engineering sector. Numerous instances of issues and solutions from real-world situations offer insightful information on the underlying goal of engineering.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We participate in a variety of activities at work, including weekly football games and sporadic networking events (lectures, presentations, etc.). Additionally, we have a Graduate and Technicians forum, which brings together those interested in achieving professional certification with the Institute of Civil Engineers. Additionally, I am permitted to take part in ICE activities and courses that are pertinent to my line of work.

  • Yes

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Skanska?
  • Be genuine. Continue to be enthusiastic and demonstrate your value as a member of the team. Be imaginative, open-minded, and driven to grow both professionally and personally. Dont be averse to trying anything new. Put the team first. Show that you understand Skanskas principles and that you are a good fit for the organisation.
