  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During the course, I have definitely learnt new skills and picked up more knowledge, this includes more in-depth experience and discussions. However, unfortunately due to the nature of my role, it has been difficult to always apply a lot of it to my day-to-day job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme as it gives me the opportunity to learn outside of my job role. I also look forward to breaking up the week with something totally different as my role can get a bit repetitive sometimes. However, as my job is very full on and the apprenticeship sessions include very informative presentations, the work load can often lead to some stress and a lot of work to catch up on.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very structured and during the catch up reviews I am always informed of what topics I will be covering and when. Even prior to starting the course, I was asked to complete a review so that the length of time could be determined. My monthly sessions are also always booked in advance so I can ensure availability.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Unfortunately due to the nature of my job, there isnt much support I am getting. My manager is sometimes unable to join my reviews as she has other meetings scheduled in. I am allowed to book some time off during my day, however I then have to catch up with my day-to-day job outside of working hours. I also have limited time to research subjects for this reason, causing me to feel behind or worried that I will not meet the criteria at the end of my course.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is supportive when I ask them any questions or make them aware of my concerns. They are also happy to work around my times when booking in the monthly sessions. My tutor has been helpful in assisting to bring out the best in me. Although we do not have daily interactions, the communication we have is sufficient.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As detailed above, although there are aspects which relate to my role, the course goes into in-depth discussions, models and laws which do not apply to my daily tasks. Sometimes these duties are carried out by other departments so I have to communicate with them and the Quality teams to get the answers that I am after.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is currently a YVOS Representative role, however to be part of this, you have to be nominated. Unfortunately, even if i was I would not have the time to be able to assist and participate. There are numerous other opportunities in Skanska, but in our department we are not often pushed to look into these.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Skanska to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • Unfortunately the role and the workload expectations are very stressful, there is no push to improve and often I find that I am not given the support that I deserve (even when going out of my way to always produce remarkable results). The money is also not very motivating and a few of my team members feel unheard.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Skanska?
  • I would suggest to ensure clarity on the roles and duties required from the company/line manager prior to accepting the job. Skanska job descriptions are very vague which can sometimes cause confusion on what exactly is required from applicants and later leaving them to feel inundated with work. Otherwise the people at Skanska are great to be around.
