  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I go onto site first thing to attend a daily briefing, then I go back into the office and start filling out test packs and find the correct drawings. I usually have a meeting sometimes examples of one of these is: a health and safety walk a progress walk a co-ordination meeting Student Session Subcontractor Progress meeting Then sometimes I deal with our client by taking them to witness a test of one of our mechanical systems or taking the client on a walk round the site. Overall, no day is the same but its always enjoyable.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme, we have student sessions and other events with all the apprentices at Skanska and its nice to have people around you doing the same thing as you. The team is really support in ensuring you can do what you want to do and lead your career in any direction. Also, you are support with any issues you may be having and everyone works with you to support what you need so that you can get what you want out of your apprenticeship.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very, we have a competency framework of what we will learn in years 1 - 2 of the apprenticeship and then what we will learn in years 3 - 5, which also guides us on how we can achieve this and what we need to do. Our progress on this is tracked every quarter to make sure we are achieving as we should.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Lots of support, there's always someone to contact if need be and they always ensure you know who it is. In our monthly student sessions we discuss any issues we are having and what we can do to overcome them. You always have someone in your corner there whenever you need. Everyone is so nice and helpful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My apprenticeship with Skanska is brilliant. However, Lambeth college are not. I started my course 2 months late with lessons being constantly cancelled. I finally started and had a temporary teacher who wasn't supportive at all and we had no line of contact with him for 3 months he taught us, in this 3 months we learnt little to nothing. Now things are better and we have a good tutor who is very supportive but 5/6 months of no support is not okay as we are now behind.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think it helps at lot as it helps put the pieces together. It helps you understand the importance of the work you do and why we do it. It helps you understand all the technical stuff that needs to be explained in more detail and how things work in depth.
