  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a Technology Engineer within the Client Engineering team, I work on MVPs (Minimal viable products) that might end up as a production application. It's a dynamic and exciting environment in which I code cloud native applications using popular frameworks and microservices architecture. It's not a pure developer role and it's certainly not a system admin role, I could be at times presenting a weekly client playback and then giving a demo of an IBM cloud pak capability in a customer workshop.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • At the moment I am doing a 9-week Development boot camp to upskill myself in Front-End, Back-End, Kubernetes and open shift and also learning to build cloud native applications. It's allowed me to build upon the skills I learn at university and apply them in this boot camp and learn further which I will use in projects to come.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really like the mix of University and work as it gives me the best of both worlds and ensuring I have the expertise and skills that I learn once a week at University and apply them at work. The level of support from both University and work has made my experience more enjoyable!

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Perfectly organised with the 4 days I have at work and the day at University, it gives me the time to get best out of both and not miss much from projects compared to other programmes which are more block based; I prefer going in once a week to University.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have endless support, having a Foundation Manager who's there to help me with anything regarding progress, general work life and anything in-between; I have my task manager who supports me in the work I do and also a mentor who's there to guide m and help me in any way. There's so much out there.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Immense support from my University with my Skills tutor being the vocal point and meeting regularly (every 2 months) to make sure I am on track and progressing well towards my qualification; my tutors are always there whenever I need them and provide the support any student needs when they need it!

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The way things are planned out and the specialism I am able to choose in the next few months will help me use that to perform better in my role, for example learning front-end development and then programming has and will continue to better me in my role as a tech engineer.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are so many ways to get involved, with the use of Slack it is so easy to set something up whether that is a 5-aside tournament, networking event, a lunch and learn, an after work social with the team. There are a plethora of things to get involved in.
