  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am presented with client issues with our software and look at how we can assist them, whether thats through changing code due to internal bugs, or understanding what is wrong with the setup they're currently using. We document thoroughly what we change and often make other small projects to assist others within the team.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learned so many skills. I have an understanding of how the business works and how the software works. Ive highly developed my programming skills, and my debugging skills have grown exponentially. Being in this team has also taught me so many practical skills, such a problem solving, communication, and teamwork.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love what I do, and I really enjoy the course within university. I am given proper responsibilities and made to feel like a valued member of the team. It has been very hard, with a large learning curve, but it has definitely been worth it so far and I love what I do.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I have a specific day each week in which I can complete all my university work and this is definitely sufficient. I don't have to spend time outside of this day catching up on work or university and I have tons of support and know at all times what to do.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • With the University Of Exeter, I have a mentor/tutor who I can go to with specific queries, and I can also message the lecturers for help if I do not understand something about an assignment or recent workshop we have had. They are fast to respond and are very willing to help.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • At first I found the degree quite generalised and hard to apply specifically to my role as my role is very specific. As the degree has gone on, I have begun learning modules which directly relate to my role, and also skills which are definitely applicable to what I do. There are so many learning objectives that some are hard to apply, but the majority are directly related to helping me perform better in my role.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are so many communities and groups you can join. We have so many social activities which we can join, as well as giveback opportunities which allow us to do tasks in which we usually wouldnt do with new people. Networking is so common within IBM and there are so many groups to join where you can expand your network.

  • 9a. Would you recommend IBM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • IBM are always here to support you. They will train you extremely well in your field and will have many people ready to support you if things get hard. Its extremely rewarding to see your impact within such a large company. They will give you support up until you decide to leave, you are not left alone to fend for yourself or learn alone.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to IBM?
  • Be yourself! When applying for an apprenticeship at IBM, they dont expect you to know everything already, they expect you to be passionate and willing to learn. They will look at if they believe you as an individual fit into one of their teams, they arent looking to trick you out and find out what you dont know yet. Make sure you speak about what would make you a good fit to the team and be sure to not overpower the group during the assessment centre, but be sure to give ideas!
