  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoyed the workshops which were well presented and set out to make sure everyone had a good understanding of the topics. The breakout sessions within the meeting were great to see other views and work with people outside of my organisation. I enjoyed learning in more detail about subjects on people management, without the apprenticeship and raise the bars support I would not have explored in any details about how to be a better team leader.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme was very well structured throughout with set workshops throughout the period. I do feel the assignments have ended up bulked towards the latter part of the period however this may be that I have struggled at times to manage my day job and take time for the apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer allows me the time to do the work however they are not very involved in what I have done. Raise the bar have helped in facilitating this with regular reviews with my manager. I have spoken to other colleagues within my workplace, and they have also felt that they have struggled to have time from work to do their assignment. I think it is easy for an employer to say you have as much time as you need however the work keeps coming in and still needs to be delivered.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • From the start the mentors and trainers at Raise the Bar have been very approachable and open to support me. When I have struggled they have taken the time to support me and provide some advice on the work and great advice on work situations that link to my apprenticeships and potential blockers and how to overcome them.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes we have a sports and social club. The club advertise events and opportunities to do things outside of work including bike rides, football, netball and set up events such as cake decorating skills. At work there is also a socail media platform called Yammer where people from across the organisation can post of a social web based app to support each other. We also have additional Environmental Leave days where we can take time out of work and deliver and Environment project or event, for example this year I have signed up to help in January with other staff to plant left over Christmas trees in the sand dunes to help the wildlife trust reduce sand dune erosion.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Department of Environmental Food and Rural Affairs to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The workplace has like minded people which all have a goal to protect and improve the environment. There are lots of support groups which you can join and there has been lots of work to make sure as an employer they are inclusive from and EDI aspect. I have always found the culture to be supportive and friendly and everyone helps each other. There are benefits such as flexi time, opportunities for overtime, 2 environmental leave days and we have a staff benefits membership to get discounts.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Department of Environmental Food and Rural Affairs?
  • An honest view is that as an employer they to do not have the most competitive salary however the culture and ways of working support flexible working and promote great wellbeing to staff. In terms of advice on applying you will need to be patient during recruitment as the current recruitment process takes too long and can be very frustrating. Also the current recruitment process involves a capability assessment type setup so you need to understand this.
