  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an HR consultant. I work with the business i support to design , plan and implement project interventions which deliver a people impact to the organisation. I work with stakeholders in the business areas and also with my hr colleagues to deliver projects which align to the strategy of HSBC

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • i have learnt a lot of new theory about organisation culture, design and the most useful part being the understanding of change management processes and approach. I am working towards the CIPD and this has made me look at more external learnings via CIPD meetings, Employment law updates to name a few

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i enjoy the learning, but i struggle to find time to dedicate to it. I am in a very busy job and it is really hard to find time to do the online learning. I also find reading off the screen much of the time, very draining. I wish there was some face to face time.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • At first it was very poorly structured, but following feedback this has changed. The one positive thing is the support coach who is always there for me and is very responsive. The start of the course was confusing and some of the requirements were not clear initially. Thankfully i persisted.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • HSBC as a whole has offered very little support. My manager is not really interested and i have had very little outreach from the Apprentice team / co-ordinator since starting the programme. I suspect that is not intentional , but i think it is a lost opportunity. Given the size of HSBC i would expect more

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • This is difficult as it is ongoing. So far , i have had support but it is still becoming clear what i need to do. The training provider is generally on hand if i am struggling and some of the documentation has been quite useful. I don't think i am someone who needs a huge amount of support though.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • If i am honest, i am not really confident that this will help me to change how i am performing substantially. Nevertheless i am enjoying the learning of theory and i am looking forward to obtaining the CIPD qualification at the end of the course. This will put me in line with my peeers from a professional qualification perspective

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there are although they have been limited by Covid. there are numerous volunteering initiatives and they are the most interest to me - i have done multiple stints of volunteering for the YHA. There are also leisure clubs, but my preference is to socialise with non- work colleagues in my own time.

  • 9a. Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The benefits are good, the pay is good and the flexibility i have around working hours is really good. Should you wish to develop, there are multiple opportunities in many different locations. I have been in the organisation for 10 years and have been lucky to move roles within that period.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC?
  • Be patient as the application / interview process can be lengthy. Obviously it is a financial services organisation and so has very strict guidelines which need to be adhered to. Once in the door, there will be many opportunities for you to take advantage of if you wish. Most interviews are by zoom and competency based.
