  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I liaise with hiring teams and candidates to organise all of the interviews for Tarmac, and occasionally support Hiring Managers with their interviews too. I also respond to any queries in our Resourcing Inbox that we receive from candidates or people within the business. I support a team of 10 resourcing, each a specialist in their area, with their recruitment for positions UK wide. I create and send reports to the appropriate people, weekly, along with many other activities.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Before joining Tarmac I really struggled to communicate confidently and effectively - since then I have been able to really improve my communication skills. Working in such a fast paced environment has helped improve my time management and productiveness. Lastly, my organisation skills has really improved, I am able to stick to deadlines, and manage our inboxes and calendars in an organised way to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme has enabled me to gain real-life experience in a fast paced, corporate environment where I have been able to get a real taste of what it feels like to be in the working world. I have been able to develop a number of skills, as well as learn so many new ones, within an extremely support team and business. I am also in a CIPD college course, where I am able to learn all of the theory around HR.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is very well structured - I have one day every week set aside for my college work, along with any additional time I may need. I am also taking part in a Core Skills Programme, run my Tarmac, where I am able to develop my 'soft' skills. When my team are doing something that I have never done, I am able to shadow them. My apprentice position will last for 2 years.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As said before, I work within a very supportive Resourcing Team, and wider HR Teams, which allows me to get the very best out of my apprenticeship. My team help me by allowing me to shadow them when they are doing something that is new to me, a number of my colleges have completed their CIPD course and so offer any guidance should I need it, and allow me to ask all of the questions I need, without feeling 'silly'. On top of this, I receive support from our Learning & Development Team and Talent team with the Core Skills Programme (previously mentioned) and I am also able I can speak to them if I encounter any struggles or need any additional support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have a tutor, who sets me pre-reading, activities and assignments to do over the course of the week. On a Tuesday we then get together for 3 hours where we do a few group activities, go over what we have learnt and then discuss next week. I then have a review session with my tutor and line manager every 8 weeks, where we can talk about what I am doing well and if there is anything else I could do to improve my work.
