  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • My work experience involved interview preparatory work and walking through the different departments integral to HSCB’s work. I had the opportunity to speak to the heads of departments as well as workers who shared their experiences about their specific roles in the company and an insight into their work and life balance.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • I learnt a lot about how to cope under stress and pressure in interviews and some quick and easy techniques that I could employ if I was ever in a difficult situation. HSBC also taught me the importance of good communication for building a good rapport with the interviewer and controlling how what I say is perceived.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • I had the opportunity to navigate around the many different career paths HSBC offers and I got to speak to people who were very experienced in their fields of work. I found Investment Banking particularly interesting and when asking about what steps I could take to pursue this career I was given plenty of information and now feel that I know a lot about the career.

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • With the rise of COVID and the pandemic, my internship was virtual, but still met up to my expectations. Since I did not have to travel my travel costs did not have to be reimbursed and the internship did not pay me a wage. However, it was a free opportunity which I appreciate. So, no, I was not reimbursed.

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • As I said in previous answers, there was an opportunity to talk with staff in different areas of management and hear about their individual experiences with their specific line of work. In terms of networking, I was able to exchange contact details with many of the staff members that I met and felt I got a lot of god contacts out of this experience.

  • 9a. Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend HSBC to a friend because the working environment is very friendly and all staff members appear to be valued highly and respected. From speaking to the staff I also found that HSBC offers its employees great flexibility in their work and even provides fantastic opportunities for travel since it is an international company.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC?
  • I would say to do some research into the company before applying to see whether the specific opportunities HSBC offers match up with what they’re looking for. Having some background information about the history of the company and significant things HSBC does will do really well to impress the interviewer and show how much you want the position.
