  • 1. Please give an overview of what your work experience involved:
  • The HSBC work experience programme gave me an opportunity to get insight and hands on experience into what it would be like to work in HSBC and also many career paths at HSBC, in the UK and outside the UK. It also helped to develop my knowledge of banking and financial services, in HSBC and in other companies in the banking sector.

  • 2. What training and skills development did you learn from your work experience?
  • I received various skills including learning how to write a resume that would interest employers. We learnt what we should put in our resumes and what things to not include. We also had the opportunity to have a mock interview with an experience member of HSBC staff who gave us feedback which developed my interview skills.

  • 3. To what extent did you enjoy your work experience?
  • I throughly enjoyed my HSBC Work experience and I was sad to see the end of it. The 5 days passed very quickly and I thought that despite it being online due to Covid restrictions, it was very interactive and they dealt with the technology very well. I especially enjoyed the break out rooms

  • 4. How well organised was your work experience?
  • In my opinion the HSBC work experience was very well organized. It was clear that there had been a lot of thought out into it and a lot of work done behind the scenes. There was a diverse range of speakers who all worked in different sectors of the bank. And they were all amazing and punctual.

  • 5. How much did you learn about the company culture and what it would be like to work there?
  • I would say that we learnt a lot about company culture in the week long work experience. We got to see how the HSBC employees interacted and how much they enjoyed HSBC company culture and their focus on diversity. Which I think was great to hear. They spoke about racial barriers as well within banking which I thought was insightful.

  • 6. How much did your work experience help you in deciding on your future career path?
  • I think that the HSBC work experience gave me great insight into paths within the baking sector. However I do not think that I will go into it. It helped me decide my future career path as we received a talk about a career in tech. This interested me greatly

  • 7. Were you paid or reimbursed for this experience?
  • we were not paid or reimbursed for the HSBC work experience because it was all online and their was no travel to be reimbursed for. It was advertised that it was not paid so this was expected. Whilst I did not gain any monetary value from the work experience. I did gain invaluable insight into a career within the finance sector

  • 8. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees?
  • Yes there were many opportunities for networking and to talk to other students who many shared the same insight and career drive. It was great to meet other students all around the country and I think that was due to the fact that the work experience was held online, so it ended up benefiting me.

  • 9a. Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would definitely recommend HSBC to a friend in the future, as well as the HSBC work experience programme. I think that whether it is online or not, it gives invaluable insight into HSBC and even if you’re not interested in working in HSBC it provides you with many employability skills

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC?
  • I think that the advice that I would give to others applying to HSBC for the work experience is that you should make sure you are prepared for the telephone interview. You can do this by visiting the HSBC website and reviewing their values and vision, and think back to these whilst answering questions in the interview.
