  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • i am a civil engineer apprentice. i keep site diaries and survey the site i am on with surveying equipment such as total stations and prisms. i also keep track of deliveries that come to site and just make sure everything on site is running smoothly which is really important.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many new skills especially on my site placement. I have learnt how to use surveying equipment such as total stations and using prisms to located and produce points. I have also done my PTS training for working on tracks and with railways. that was very interesting for me.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • i have really enjoyed my experience on my programme. i really love the college part, learning and making new friends. i also really enjoyed my time on site as i met new people and improved my knowledge about civil engineering vastly and fell much more confident in what i do.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • it is very well structured as i spend 9 weeks at Uni then the rest of the year on site. this means i don't need to worry about college work while working on site and can give my full attention to each one when needed. it also doesn't feel very stop-start as i got to know everyone really well in 9 weeks rather than a shorter period.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have received great amount of support from my employer - BAM Nuttall. they have allowed me to expand my knowledge vastly as i have been able to go on training courses through BAM Nuttall like my PTS training and other training that is vital for working as a civil engineer.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Leeds College of Building have been great in supporting myself towards my qualifications as a civil engineer. the provide great support even outside of lesson time. I feel very confident in each unit i have taken and especially enjoyed Tarek teaching Maths in college as he made it super easy to understand hard concepts.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification helps me perform very well in my role as a civil engineer because it gives me the tools and knowledge i need to succeed in my role as a civil engineer and the construction industry in general as well.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there we a couple at college but we were not there long enough to join most. on site there were some socials called engineers forums which were great for meeting people.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • BAM has really helped me along with this apprenticeship and given me lots of amazing opportunities to further my career. They had a great split of girls to boy ratio as well in my class which was great to see as there aren't many women in this industry.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • I would make sure to know BAM's goals and what their company is about and also ask questions you want to know about the company in interviews and assessments as well to get a better view on the company.
